AR Board,

I will be purchasing a Dakota 416 Rigby this week and currently torn between 2 that are for sale.

One is at First Stop

Here is the link

http://www.gunsamerica.com/977001014/Guns/Rifles/Dakota...ms_M76_416_Rigby.htm

The other one is laocated at Hendershots

http://www.hendershots.net/gunRoomDetail.aspx?id=1873

Price point at First shot is $5999 with Exhibition wood, the one at Herdershot is $6700 with XXX Walnut.

The POV is not about Dakota but which gun?

Thanks in advance for your candor..

I dislike light wood, always seemed to compare too closely to sapwood. The second one really turns my crank, I would cheerfully pay the difference for it and go happy. That second one is just the ______(fill in the blank)!!

What features does the first gun have? The photos are too tiny to tell.

Since they're both M76s, what makes you think there is any difference between them?

I like the wood on the Hendershots gun better. It has good grain flowing the right direction. It has a barrel banded front sight which you can't tell on the First Stop gun. It also has mounts which are about $150 extra. I would tell Lance at Hendershots you are interested in his gun but are encountering a substantial price difference in favor of the competitors gun. I'll bet he will adjust the price somewhat. To confuse the issue somewhat take a look at the used takedown Griffin & Howe has for about the same money. Very handy for travel.

I also like the rifle at Hendershots although I can only see very small pictures of the first rifle.

But for a 416 Rigby I would prefer darker wood.

If you are willing to wait a little, the owner at first stop will go to the Dakota factory and hand pick you a stock. Tell him what you are looking for and he will take care of it for you. First Stop is a great place to deal with and offer some great prices on new and used Dakota rifles. Hendershots also has a great reputation however I have never bought anything from them.

We're going to be "gifted" with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don't, Which purportedly covers at least ten million more people, without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that didn't read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a President, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, for which we'll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke!!!!! I second that about First Stop. He's in real tight with Dakota and can get you just about anything you want. He did for me. Name's Mark.

After perusing the two rifles, First Stop's rifle is a Model 76. Hendershot's is an African, the top-of the line version with a few extras the First Stop gun apparently doesn't have. That's why the higher price. At least, that's the way I read it. You can call Mark for details, if you wish.

Not enough information on the gunsamerica offering: LOP for example. The Hendershot gun has two things that knock it out for me, a mercury recoil reducer and a too short length of pull (13-5/8). Suggest you listen to Roscoe/Jetdrvr.

Just looked at the Dakota 76 take down at Griffin and Howe. Does look promising.

Regards
