3000+ fps from 458 Lott Login/Join

I shot a few loads from my 458 Lott today above 3000 fps. It might have been with 250gn Barnes 45/70 bullets ,but I just wanted to try. I was playing with 300 gn pig/plains game loads and thought I would try these slugs with the huge hollow points.@50 yds ,bullet holes were touching when using 82 gns of AR2207. It might be an impracticle load for 99.9% of hunting but I love experimenting. Might be usefull for rabbits and crows if yousit a 40gn .224 V max inside the hollow point. (yes they do fit but wobble around a bit.)
Soon I will grind most of the front portion off the 250 gn bullet of to get it down to 200gn for a few crono loads. Why ? just to shoot a few loads at 3200 fps over the crono ,while showing bystanders ,the 600 gn Barnes bullet.

I know ,totaly useless info for most people ,but some fun to fill in an afternoon.

Hey man if it toots your horn do it! The 250 gn load isn't necessarily impractical either. Do you do any hog hunting? Would be quite the show stopper on a big hog. Big Grin

How many bystanders do you get at the range by the way? Once I get my biggg bore, It'll be interesting to see how many come over to see what I'm shooting.

You might be the only, or at least one of the few, people in history to accomplish this feat with a .458 Lott.

Big Grin It is good to know that no matter where you are in the world if there is some gun powder and a rifle available. That somewhere a redneck will find it and reload it, to shoot some projectile out of it at ultrasonic speed "just because."

Fusino. The bystanders were new shooters who were doing the practicle part of their firearms safety course. They had been plinking away with the 22s and 222s while I was working up loads for the 300 weatherby. A few started looking at the Lott cases with the 600 gn bullets ,so I started shooting a few groups with the Lott. Hubel458 3600 fps with 300 gn bullets.Jesus! With the Barnes 300 gn X spitzers ,this would be great for wood chucks I was thinking.

cr--Oh yes a lot of fun, and if I'd had the right powder at
the time I could of got 4000 with 250 gr, but
we got it to 3800.

Cases like the Lott are really versatile,
big bullets for big critters, and lighter ones for deer like 350 gr Speer, and real light ones for varmints and high speed plinking.Ed.

Hey, that is pretty tame actually.

1990-1991, a Canadian named Karl Bosselmann (Canadian Shooting Annual) got a .458 WinMag over 4200 fps:

Nylon sabot
220 grain .308 caliber Hornady RNSP
Winchester Brass
CCI 200 LR primer
65 grains of IMR 4227
Weight of sabot plus bullet: 252.4 grains
Ruger No. 1 with 24" barrel

VELOCITY = 4,226 FPS AVERAGE

ACCURACY around 3 " group size at 60 yards.

No pressure signs, but the author was uneasy about going higher with the charge without "laboratory equipment."

The .308/220gr sabot load needed a faster twist barrel (10" twist) rather than the 14" twist.

Back to the drawing board.

I guess I'll have to resize some 429 200gr bullets to 416 and see how fast they go out of my 416 taylor. Or maybe 180s and shoot Smiler some p dogs with it.

I did take some 60 .312 60gr gold dot hollow points and shoot them out of my 308 at 2600 very accurate out to 50 yards ok at 70 start to loose stability pass that. Put hit a p dog at 50 or under they just blow up.

PC. I ordered these 250gn Barnes bullets from Toys for Big Boys. They have them in stock. They are expensive though and come in packs of 20. I use the proper 300 gn Barnes X spitzers made for 458 and up velocities for pigs. Presure is not very high when pushed to 2900 fps with the 300s and they have a good BC. The 300s go nearly full length through pigs with just the base remaining when fired from very close. I will load up some 250s when I go bush next and will check them out on some downed pigs. I think the big open point 45/70 bullets would lack penetration on big pigs.

RIP-If I figured the gun would take it I could get about twice as much 4227 in my case.
We could get that saboted bullet to 6 grand.
But I think I'd want a 458 barrel about
2.5 inches on the outside, and bmg size
bolt and lugs.

Bugger it CR500 I would rather pay heaps less for Taipan bullets or rem 405 softs.................have you tried the re 405 bulk 45/70 bullets in the lott yet I have worked with them in my marlin 45/70, but not the lott, I tried the speer 400 gr in the lott and it was just to soft, found this to be the case in the 45/70 as well, smacked a couple of bigg grassys through the back end with woodleigh 500 gr RN's a while back and the drilled a hole through but smashed heaps of heavy bone and put them down and out even with a hip shot !!
