I have a sporterized 1917 that is sentimental to me. The barrel on it is shot.

I want to make it into a moderate cal DG rifle. What caliber will be the least expesive to bebuild to and a good choice as well? I am thinking a .404 Jeffery or a 9.3 X 75..404 Jeffery9.3 X 62other stated below

jeffeosso458 lott - easy and WIDE choice of bullet, brass, and will feed just fine.
if you build a 404, please don't try to hot rod it to a 416 rem .. its not meant to do that.

ledvmJeff,
I have a .458 WM and a .500 NE double.
No Hot-Rod for me. I just like good ole honest calibers with modest velocity.
So...don't want a lott

My bad...was thinking 9.3 X 62 but confused it with 9.3 X 74R and wrote 9.3 X 75.

Duane WiebeWith the 9.3 x 62 you'd certainly have less rail work, bolt work, extractor, etc..might even feed just fine without any work at all.
One of the great cartridges of the world!

fourboreI see the poll reset, so; based on my 48 hr fascination with the 9.3x62 I will vote for that. Sounds more fun. Maybe end up a pound lighter than your 375HH.
I dont have either a 404 or 9.3. Both sound like very practical choices.

AzGuyYou already have a 375...what would you gain with a 9.3x62...???
I voted 404... fills the gap between your 375, 458, and 500

Basically...a 9.3 is more like a .35 Whelen than a .375 H&H isn't it???

Idaho Sharpshooterjust have the barrel bored and rifled to 9,3x62. That will leave the rifle looking original on the outside.

Bill/OregonI voted .404, just because it is such a classic and I have always wanted one. The 1917 action seems to beg for a larger cartridge than 9,3 X 62, at least to me. My first centerfire was a surplus Eddystone from Sears. Dad bought it for me for $29 about 1965. Even sent in for the Williams Gun Sight pamphlet on sporterizing the 1917. Never did more than bob the stock (in junior high shop class -- try THAT today!). Barrel was shot.
There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t.

butchlambertI love my 9.3X62. It does not wear my ass out on the Bench like my Lott and my 450 Ackley Magnum.I'm old and am a pussy and I'm building a 416 Rigby out of my 1917.

I think the 1917 begs for longer cartridges as well. A 300 H&H perhaps. 416 or 450 Rigby would be interesting.

Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984:
"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

Idaho SharpshooterMatt,
IMHO, it would be a lot cheaper to buy a CZ in 416 or 450 than all the hassles in a conversion.
Not to hijack, but I have a CZ 416 Rigby I'd sell for about $1400 with a Leupold 2.5-8X x36mm VX-III with the rear AO for about $1400. Dies and some brass too. It is not in the classifieds, so this is not an offer to sell. One pops up here ever now and then in the same price range. Any sort of conversion would cost about 50% more, and the resale would be less than half your investment.

My understanding FWIW is that the 9.3x62 is closer, in terms of terminal ballistics, to the .375 H&H and is possibly suitable for the same type of game. The 9.3x57 might be closer to the .35 Whelen, but that's a completely different animal.

fourboreI think the difference between the 9.3x62 and 35 whelen is the bullets. The case diameter and powder capacity are about the same. Hornady loads the 35 Whelen with 200 grain bullet with higher muzzle energy than thier low pressure 9.3 ammo with 285gr bullets. But, the 285gr bullets looks like serious big game bullet suitable for brown bear.
For example three Hornady loads:
9.3x62 285 gr 2360fps 3537ft-lbs
35 Whelen Superformance 200gr 2910fps 3760ft-lbs
375HH 300gr 2530fps 4260ft-lbs
The 375 is about 200fps faster and 15 gr more bullet than the 9.3. Is that 15- 20% more energy? Both could be Superformanced and I expect the same difference. The Whelen and 9.3 deliver about the same power.
The 9.3 physical size is almost identical to a 366-06. Compared to belted magnums like 338 or 375 you have much smaller case, less powder, less recoil in a potentially lighter and less expensive gun. The 9.3 is supposed to do better with a short barrel than big case magnums.

jeffeossothe 9,3x62 is a 366 whelen .. interchangable for all practical reasons
the 9,3x64 is closer in terms of performance to a 375 HH .. and is capable of making 4K ME
the difference is not just length, as the x64 is .507 or close enough, diameter of the casehead.
.473 for the x62 (roughly 12mm)
.507 for the x64 (12.9mm for some reason)
and (if you take out the belt) .511 (nearly 13mm) for the HH (yes, the belt is .532/13.5mm)
x62 - about 71gr h20
x64 about 81
hh, about 89

Danny did mine and I couldn't be more pleased. I'm sure Jim's work is excellent too; I've never heard a negative word about either.
My rifle was a Remington Model 30 Express in 30-06 and it functions fine without any additional work.

Have to agree with Ed, it's a big action, with big potential, use it to it's full potential, It's almost like having a large pickup 4x4 in the shed and wanting to put a new 4 cylinder motor in it.
MY 600 ok is being built on a P14, it's been over 12 months now, damn I hope it's ready soon.
BTW It's a "Pattern 14" and a "Model 17" they are different and get mixed up a lot.
