Hello, I am a new member and I need some help. I just recieved a new in the box Win. M70 LH 375H&H Safari Express. The rifle feeds loaded rounds fine but will not feed empties. This I would guess is reasonable from a rifle at this price range. My concern is that the cross bolts are recessed a little more at the rear of the action and on the right side even more. There is also a surface crack in the wood even with the center of the left rear cross bolt, between the cross bolt and the bolt handle recess. Do you think this was caused by the cross bolt being over thighten and recessed deeper on the opposite side and would you be concerned that the crack will grow with use? This is my first big bore rifle so I am walking on new ground. Thanks for any help you can provide.

As a general rule, a new model 70 needs a trip to a good gunsmith and about another $500 to $800 of work to put it in proper order.

I would not worry about the rifle not feeding empty brass. That is not required as far as I am concerned. If you were to extract an empty case from the chamber, and then short stroke the bolt, the empty would reenter the chamber. That is proper function for a CRF. I can't comment on the stock without seeing it.

The time to inspect the stock for cracks is before you buy it, not afterward. Contact USRAC and see whether they will exchange the stock for you. What happens when you try to feed empty brass (from the magazine, I presume)? George

I've never tried to feed empty cases in my LH M-70 375 H&H and was wondering why anyone would want to. I can't see shooting anything with an empty case. The empty case thing is for recoil sensitive shooters. The only easy day is yesterday!

Fjold, That's part of the 'green hunting' thing; you chamber an empty case, and say 'BANG!' George

Thanks for your response. I was under the impression that a DGR should feed empties? Also I purchased the rifle over the phone and I did ask what condition the rifle was in. Do you see inconsistancy in the recessing of the cross bolts on the Safari Express?

JC, there are a lot of opinions on what a DRG rifle should and should not do. I have heard people say that a rifle should feed empyt cases however I can't tell you I have ever checked any of mine. What I do recomend and practice is to run every round through the rifle prior to the hunt. Work the bolt slow, fast, on your head...what ever, but make sure all your ammunition feeds properly. As for the stock it is hard to say without looking. If the crack is on the surface then I would not be too concerned. If it is all the way through the stock then you may want to have someone take a look at it prior to doing much shooting. In both cases you can most likley have it repaired. I do recomend you have the action bedded. Winchester does a poor job in this area. Proper bedding of both recoil lugs will prevent future issues with your stock. Good luck. It's a lefty-- and they're hard to come by! Mine was fine out of the box; I can't comment on the stock-- but it's fixable, one way or another.

Who did you get the rifle from? Maybe they would help you deal with Winchester on the stock. If you bought this from an individual you may be on your own. Some guys bought these up and tried to gouge the hell out of people.I have seen these sold for horrible prices that were bought just after the announcement at the normal retail price. If an individual sold it you can bet they knew the stock was defective.Gunstores often don't take the time to carefully look over a rifle.Good luck, these are tough times when it comes to classic Mod. 70's.

Thanks for all the info. I am waiting for a return call. Can any of you explain to me why the color on the action is more of a matte color than the rest of the Safari Express? Is this do to harding of the action.
