Pigman if you want penetration I suggest you try the woodleigh 405 grain fn which they have designed especially for the 45/70. They hang together real well and retain heaps of weight. They mushroom perfectly as well, I recovered one from a redgum tree that penetrated around 10 inches and still weighed 385 grains. The sambar shooters here in Australia are having good success with them. I reckon that projectile loaded to 1850 fps would pretty much put anything belly up. I load 46 grains of AR2207 for around 1850 fps aprox. AR powders are equivalent to Hodgens I beleive. I have shot pigs but I do not use the 405 gr woodleighs I use the 300 gr sierra HP's there dynamite, I get enough penetration and I get explosive expansion. Hit with the woodleighs they penetrate right through end to end but I reckon they are suited to bigger stuff. The fastest opening 400 grainer I have used to date is the speer FN. I have heard that there is a new 350 grs JFn especially for the .45-70 in stronger chamberings from Hornady, suited to LAs. Any experiences? Has somebody loading data for a Browning 86 / new Winchester 86 ( shorter throat than Marlins )? Good shooting! Hermann ------------------

The 400 grain FN speer is my favorite 45-70 bullet. It opens up to silver dollar size and blows bigger holes than a 7mm mag. I don't get good accuracy with the light bullets.

Pigman I would go with the 300gr grain Partition. I use them this year in my boys Remington 1100 20ga. This is the new 260gr Par. slug from Winchester. I shot 2 deer openen day at a 125yds the exit hole was about 21/2" the deers only ran about 20yds

quote: The 350gr JFNs are of Interlock design. Hornady uses them in their 450 Marlin loads. I've loaded some "Level II (new Marlin 1895/Winchester 86)" 45-70 rounds with them, but I haven't evaluated them yet. As far as penetration goes, these JFNs should be ideal for "piggin'". I've just received some 460gr WFNGC hard-cast from Cast Performance. These should penetrate from here to eternity if properly motivated! Cast Performance also has new 405 gr and 420 gr LFNGCs not listed on their website. The 420 grainer looks real promising as a general do-it-all "thumper" bullet. ------------------ "Did you use excessive force?---I HIT IT WITH EVERYTHING I HAD!
