You can also have a machine shop take a couple of hundredths off the base/skirt of the die to shorten the body slightly.

Just back from my range session with the R8 Blaser in 500J

I loaded some 570 woodleigh's s/n that I use in my 500NE double, and also some woodleigh's 600 P/P .

I used ADI 2209, equivalent to H4350. NOrma cases and F215m primers.

The 570 averaged 2450 fps with 125grns and the 600 averaged just under 2360 fps with 128grns.

Both loads had stiff but manageable recoil.

No pressure signs at all.

I think that you could up the 128grn another grain but it is getting quite compressed.

A lot more scope to get the 570grain loads well over 2500 and manageable recoil I think.

As an aside, I shot my 500 ne doubles as well , and they were pussycats in terms of recoil with my regulating load of 570 @ 2050fps!

Ditto the 470 with 500 @ 2150 fps.

There was a mate at the range shooting his CZ in 505 GIbbs. Now that thing rocked him back a step each time he shot. His loads couldn't match my J loads in terms of velocity, and they did recoil much more.
The CZ was quite light though.

So there you have it. I don't plan on doing much more with the 500J in breaking 2500.
It seems just not relevant!
Nothing alive could stand upto that sought of power, as long as the shot was reasonably placed.

I,m only using the J gun for some recoil "acclimatization " as my 600 VC double is arriving this week!

That will indeed be another chapter.

Cheers

Nick

They are perfect for groundhogs:
Aluminum ballistic tip with gilding metal jacket and soft lead core, cup&core.

The 600 has arrived!! Customs has it and its in the process of being cleared. Will have it released next week once I pay the duty and taxes etc.
IT came direct from the factory, no problems so far, just like my 500 a couple of years ago.

I have imported from both the EU and US. Generally ok , but the export permits from US and now EU take
atleast a month to get processed. This is the hardest part of it. Once landed in oz, the rest of it is easy, EXCEPT if you have a gun with a non adjustable trigger that breaks less than 2.2lbs, then you are in deep SH..... They don't meet the safety requirements and will not be cleared. Pm me if you want more info,

I've imported about a dozen now and know the process well.

Cheers

There are at least two versions of the Jeffery floating around. The metric version is different enough to provide issues reloading. Get the right dies for the right reamer. 500 Schuller vs. 500 Jeffery!!!

I'm using rcbs 500j dies, Norma brass in my Blaser R8 , all good so far in reloading, some cases 3 shots so far.

Nickh did you develop loads for the 500 - 3 1/4" Nitro? Most data seems to be for the 3"version.

Cheers, Chris

I have owned and shot two Jeffery's rifles. One by Davenport, RIP has shot this one in Oklahoma. The other was made by R. Breeding. Ryan's gun was 500 j, not Schuller. Ammo would not interchange. Could have been due to reamer issues or die mfg. Issues. Who knows. Had to keep one the davenport gun is home. Actually it's with Nick Hughes to test drive!,! I did not hot rod either. Used them and a 505 Gibbs on buffalo. Was also planning to smack an elephant also but we had no such luck. I think the bullet you choose is more important than the hot rod that shoots it. Just my observation with 3 over 50 ca. On game and somewhere over 500 rounds down line!

Or just get the 505 Gibbs; no ammo confusion, and classy to boot too Big Grin

That 505 Gibbs was a real kicker man alive. It was originally made for Mark Sullivan as a Cary rifle. Crafted by Sterling Davenport on a single square bridge magnum Mauser action, 22" Kreiger barrel, three down one up, and weighed a paltry 9.5 pounds. I could shoot three rounds off the bench before the headaches started. The load was 142 gr. Reloader 22 and a 525 gr Woodleigh bullet. The Olher showed an average of 2385ft/sec. Had it for two Safaries and 3 buff. No elephant. My wife sold it back to Sterling before it could put a perminant dent in my brain.
