Hog Hunting with the 500 Jeffery
My youngest son and I went hog hunting today. Eric took our vintage Rem 700 270 shooting 150g Partitions, I took the 500 Jeffery shooting 570g TSX's. Of course my son got the biggest boar at about 12 feet coming for him in deep thickets. His first shot put him down, right through the eye but he was squealing tryin to get up. It took two more shots from the 270 to quiet him down. I got mine at 8 feet, he looked at me, I looked at him and then a second later I fired. My 500 Jeffery, hit him like a tank was dropped on him, went through the skull between the eyes, ripped out a foot of his spine and exited after about 6 feet of penetration. We hunted with dogs, it was a blast!

Some pics of me and my son, his great big boar the guide estimated at 550 lbs undressed, mine was about 100 lbs lighter.

A great time!

Chuck...Wow! Those hogs could swallow the ones I'm used to seeing! I'm not sure the 500 Jeffery is enough gun!

Keeriky! Those are big hogs! Looks like lots of fun. We have some feral hogs out on the Olympic Peninsula but not sure they go 550 lbs!

Heck with the pigs. Saw that pic of Colorado. That is what excites me with +30 days of 100 degree weather here is Dallas and it is not even August yet!! Eeker
Good time to check out your African "heat" related cartridge performance here in Texas. 105-106 today.
Got to go to the top of the thread and dream of Colorado again.

I always figured the 500 Jeffery's would work on hogs! wave

Sid-
It looks like you and your son have a great time together and that is awesome. Enjoy every minute you can spend together no matter if it's hunting or just a casual visit. The only thing my dad would share his time with was a bottle of whiskey so I had to learn to hunt and fish by myself. Those are really nice hogs and I would put them in DG category at those ranges.

Those Woodleighs sure do expand don't they? My 570g TSX at 2400 fps at 8 feet went through the skull, blew out the neck vertebrae and exited through the left rear thigh. Didn't do as much damage up front though. Piggies don't have a chance against the 500s it would seem.

Those are some big hampshire (or hamp cross) hogs. Was the owner just thinning out some old ones?

Nope, they were let loose (feral)10 to 20 years ago. There are probably at least 50 or more living in the 300 acre thicket. There are some Russian boars in there too. You don't know what the dogs are going to scare up, but you have to prepared to shoot.

Chuck

What keeps them in the 300 acre thicket?

The thicket is a subset of a 1000 acre high fenced ranch. I don't think the hogs have access to all of it, but they do have access to the ameadow and forest beyond which is at least another 300 acres, they might go out there at night, but I think they like the cover during the day.
