Also compare it to correct chamber specs. It may be over sized.

GAHUNTER,

At a given velocity (say 2230 fps) you probably will not see any difference between the RL-15 and the IMR4895. It will take more of one than the other to get to 2230 fps, but they are just about the same from a peak pressure vs velocity standpoint. Did you get pressure signs from the RL-15 at 2230 fps?

Unless you have IMR4895 already in your loading room, I wouldn't even try it. QL (and experience) say they'll act about the same with this case/bullet combination.

I use a Fed GM210M primer with these powders, since they are not really a "hard-to-light" magnum powder.

The GM215 makes sense for the ball powders, and slower magnum powders.

Found my load. Getting 2200 fps with 500-grain Hornadys, A-Frames and African Grand Slam Solids. All three shoot to same point of impact at 100 yards with very good groups. Powder is H4895 in an amount considerably higher than the Hornady manual max, but well within Quickload maximum (Also right at the Barns manual max, but with nowhere near Barns stated velocities).

I'm happy beer

Now, would somebody please tell me the winning Mega-Millions lottery number (in advance) so I can afford to go back to Africa?

GA,
hows about sharing that effective, safe load with the group? Some of us are working the same data you are, with much the same to mixed results.

thanks

Soo Weet! H4895 was the cat's meow in my Lott too. I also tried IMR4320, RL12, IMR3031, IMR4064, and Varget but all of them but the 3031 appeared to be slower than optimum. Even then, they all produced 2150-2200 fps but powder compression was such that occasionally a bullet would creep up out of the case mouth (using Hornady dies) and I had a little trouble with ring bulges right at the bullet base.

I went as high as 84grH4895 under a Hornady RNSP 500 grain for 2325 but it was way to hot to repeat. Settled on 80grains as that still rolls along around 2250 with AGSs, Hornady softs and solids, and the old RN Barnes mono solids. This was with an OAL of 3.600" for all loads, CCI250s, and BeLL brass.

Let's see, the winning numbers are 17, 22, 24, 25, 27, 28, 30, 33, 35, 37, 41, 45, 47, and 50? thumb

OK. My load is 79.2 grains of H 4895. (it took the point 2 to bring it to a 2200 fps average).

Thing is, it was a cool day (65-F). I'll test the load again on one of our "nice" summer days when it's above 90. If it's significantly above 2200, I'll back off.
