Shot some rounds through my 600 this morning…

900 grain Woodleigh soft points @ 1950… (No brake)…

The Woodleigh soft points fed fine at this velocity but at the higher velocities they have been beaten up in the magazine and would not feed…

The .620 Woodies being designed for double rifles and having a large amount of exposed lead just won’t always work in magazine rifles I guess (a protected point would be awesome)…

I got to thinking about removing some of the exposed lead from the bullet tip and creating a flat nose soft of sorts (kind of like the new Hornady offering)…

Has anyone else tried anything similar to this?

How would terminal performance be affected?

Would this delay expansion or speed it up?

People have been removing the lead from rounds since the beginning of the 'long' bullets vs. 'short' magazine boxes conflict.

As long as you do not disrupt the jacket, you should be fine. Woodleighs expand so readily, I doubt you would see any difference in terminal performance.

That's what I was thinking...

Just file it down a little short of where the jacket stops...

Grinding lead of of a bullet tip is dangerous work.
Lead dust is very toxic and does not go away.
If you got pets or small children around I would not do it at home. Get rid of the clothes you wear when doing it. Wear a face mask and shower before eating. Bad if inhaled worse if ingested.

The solution is monometal expanding solids. I've had some luck with putting a thin sheet of teflon in the front of the mag box also.-Rob
