I've put together a table to help evaluate reduced and full loads in .375". The idea is to view the recoil figures against the drop figures for 300 yards in order to find the best all around hunting loads for my wife. I plan to do the same for myself in a few years with .416" loadings.

The idea is to list the recoil in foot-pounds for a 9.5 pound rifle (Ruger Hawkeye + scope and rings, plus a couple of rounds. The drop at 300 yards is with 2.1" max height on the trajectory above the line of sight, and the wind drift for a 10mph cross wind.

Three bullets are listed below.
The 200 grain GSC HV is an excellent plains game bullet as a reduced load that will still provide adequate penetration. Field reports have been excellent.
The 235 CEB Extended Raptor is another light bullet that provides a newer technology in killing effectiveness.
The 250 grain TTSX is a medium weight mono-metal bullet with a higher BC. This combines the guaranteed penetration of a mono-metal and a BC for longer range shots at something like an eland.

375 Ruger, 9.5 pound rifle,
recoil in ft-pounds, (powder charges have been included in the calculations and varied between 65 grains and 83 grains as guesstimated to fit appropriate loads.)
drop at 300 yards (2.1” arc, 4000ft elevation)
drift at 10mph:

200 GSC - -- 2600 2700 2800 2900 3000 3100 3200 3300
recoil ft# - - 20.4, 22.5, 24.8, 27.1, 29.7, 32.2, 35.1, 37.6
drop 300y -- -11.2, -9.7, -8.4, -7.2, -6.2, -5.3, -4.6, -3.9
drift - - -- -- 11.5, 10.9, 10.30, 9.80, 9.30, 8.8, 8.50, 8.1

235 CEB - -- 2500 2600 2700 2800 2900 3000 3100
recoil ft# - - 23.8, 26.2, 28.8, 31.6, 34.5, 37.7, 41.1
drop 300y -- -12.3, -10.7, -9.2, -8.0, -6.9, -5.9, -5.0
drift - - -- -- 10.6, 10.0, 9.40, 8.90, 8.50, 8.10, 7.7

250TTSX - -- 2400 2500 2600 2700 2800 2900 3000
recoil ft# - - 24.6, 27.1, 29.6, 32.6, 36.4, 39.9, 43.6
drop 300y -- -13.0, -11.2, -9.6, -8.3, -7.1, -6.1, -5.2
drift - - -- -- 8.90, 8.40, 7.90, 7.50, 7.10, 6.70, 6.40,

For comfortable loads, I see a 9-10" drop at 300 yards as a reasonable trade-off for African hunting, where 300 yard shots are rather rare. My wife has handled 40 foot-pound recoil but we will see what she will prefer for day-in day-out loadings. She may choose something around 30 ft# but she will have an option of loads around 25 ft# or lighter.

Good work, useful info. Thanks.
A quick comparison of the 235 and 250 reveals that 15gr difference=10% change in recoil. And, a path 2" above LOS is a good max. A lot of hunters tend to shoot high. I load for several friends and their point blank ranges to around 250-270 yards on deer with cartridges in the 25-06 to 30-06 trajectory range.

In 10 safaris I can recall only two shots over 150 yds, a mountain reebok at maybe 200, and a monkey at 400+. Got the reedbok and the monkey doesn't count.

After reflecting on the tables I am thinking that the following compromise would be optimum:

The 200 GSC at 2800fps would be the best for everything from oribi to eland. The recoil is only 25 ft#. The drop of -8.4 inch at 300 yards will be easy to work with if it is accurate and a gusty wind isn't blowing. (But even a fast, high BC load would have trouble with gusty wind at 300 yards.)

For buffalo, I think that she should use either the 250 TTSX at 2650fps or the CEB at 2725fps.
The TTSX would only drop -9" at 300 yards and a buffalo will be shot under 100 yards. The CEB would drop -8.9" at 300 yards. Both would run around 31 foot pounds of recoil, which would easy to handle for one animal under hunting conditions.

What remains is to find out what kind impact change will occur between the two bullets. Will a re-sight-in be necessary for the buffalo bullet, or not? We'll find out in the next two months. 250 grain mono-metal at 2650 muzzle will take down Mr. Nyati, even if it doesn't knock the snot out of him.
