Bear,
Please advise of steps needed to make conversion. I have such a rifle and I am also considering going to 404. Ku-dude

PS: I think you have to convert the magazine box, and open up the action in the rear to take the 404 case. Additionally you may have to relieve the receiver a la the .375HH M70's. Latly, you may have to carefully open up the rails. Have I forgotten anything? K-d

You also have to open the boltface and extractor a bit and modify the ejector.

I was mulling over a M70 CRF a while back. It was a NIB 7mm stw that I had pulled the barrel off of. I put 2 (all I had) 404ne factory rounds in the magazine. Took the extractor off the bolt since the bolt face is a bit undersize for the 404 & I wanted to reduce any binding from the tight extractor. Of course the base of the cases did not fit against the undersize bolt face. I cycled the bolt fast & then slow with no problems. The rounds cycled fine. This conversion looks to be straight forward with only having to open the bolt face a bit. The rails & magazine were unaltered. Original factory.

A chap from Winchetser told me that the M70 375s from the older type magzine/follower series, would be fine for 375 Ultra if fitted with the 300 Ultra follower. So I imagine the 404 should be OK.

The M70s, from maybe the last 18 months or so, have a narrower magazine box and a scoop about an inch long and 1/4" wide machined out of the center of the follower. THe first of these has the same action rails as the older series but the more current ones have different rails. At least that is waht he told me.

diesel_dude - sounds like the 404 will be very easy in the M70; if you are in the neighborhood, visit Dave at Nitro Guns in the Chimo Guns store in Wasilla - Dave can build you anything you want as long as you speak in a respectful tone ($$) to him - very good quality work and easy to talk with - since you are interested in classic rounds, have you considered a 416 Rigby or possibly a 500 Jeffery?
