I'm going to put together a 458 ultra mag, does anyone have one? any load data?Would it be able to get a 450 x bullet or a 500gr hornady out at 2500fps?I figure it should better the 458 lott by aleast 100-150fps.Winchester action 22" stainless barrel, hopefully under 91/2 pounds for easy carring.Does anyone have info on this caliber I know a company makes a 450 cat but I wanted personal info.

griz, If you're looking for a .458 caliber that will better a 458 Lott by at least 100-150 fps. then that cartridge already exists. Called the .450 Rigby. Beltless, large capacity case able to be loaded up to near .460 Weatherby standards. You could also go with a .450 Dakota. the ballistic twin to the Rigby. Lawdog

Gary, You are on the right track... the dakota is a 458 ultramag.... it's a grand idea, if pressure kept under 45k remember, the goal is 500 grains at 2150.. just like a 450 ne jeffe

The 450 Dakota is based on the 416 Rigby case and the 458 ultramag more closely resembles the 460 G$A round which is the 404 Jeffery blown out and forward for the .458 bullet.

Sounds like a great idea. Look up the 460 G&A cartridge in Guns and Ammo last year. Great cartridge. Snapper

quote:It'll be VERY similar to the 450 Imperial Mag, which CoTW listed as somewhere around 2350 fps for max load. It's also very much like the 450 Vincent Long, seated to 3.6" or so. If you look on AR reloading pages, you'll see there are some loads that top 2500 fps, at 3.63" COL, but I'd take those as MAX pressure, since this was all done without pressure testing, I assume. According to RCBS.load, the difference in a blown-out RUM case and a blown-out Jeffery is about 0.2 grains after the bullet. I'd say it's safe to compare the two.

What about the 2400 Fps thing? Do you guys think it would kill better at that speed? 2400 fps sure helps with general shooting capabilities. Does the recoil go out of sight 500Gr. at 2400fps? Seems like a good thing to me...What do you guys thunk? Jamie
