excuse my ignorance. I have seen mention of a 45 caliber Rigby, and I wonder if it is a wildcat by necking up the .416 Rigby or whether it is was/is a production item somewhere.

How is its performance as compared to say a .458 Win Mag.

Thanks

I assume the case head size is the same as the .416. REason I am asking all of this is because I got in on that Montana Rifle Company PH action deal and ordered a Rigby sized bolt. So now I have to figure out what to do with the thing when I get it. If I get it. Big Grin Big Grin

Same case head size, same case as 416 Rigby...

Dirk,
Yup! The .460 Weatherby and the 416/450 all share the same case head size, the .500 A2 being a 460 weatherby necked up to a 510 diameter bullet.
There's actually a CZ550 in a store down in San Diego that's chambered for the 450 Rigby. Tempting, but I'm not sure who sells the ammo and it being a newer round, don't really want to bother with the costs of loading it.

Yeah, but you may need to tighten the extractor a tad.

I am doing exactly the same thing but I decided to go with the .450 Dakota instead of the .450 Rigby. I think brass for the Dakota is a little easier to get with the proper headstamp and it is a very similar case to the .450 Rigby. In addition, another AR member had a set of RCBS dies at a very good price along with some new and once fired brass. You can find new brass for the .450 Dakota at Midway and I just talked to the guys at Dakota Rifles. They said they had about a two year supply of .450 Dakota on hand and, in the future, Hornady is going to be making Dakota brass. Food for thought....

Mr. Bush

Do I understand you correctly that the .450 Dakota uses the same case head size as the .416 Rigby?

But not to be confused with the 450 Rigby MATCH which was a rimmed case firing a paper patched bullet and similar thing to the 45 Sharps.

They are very close. According to the drawing that I have from Dakota, the rim on a .450 Dakota should measure .582. The rim of my Dakota brass actually mics something around .575.

According to the 7th edition of CARTRIDGES OF THE WORLD, the rim of a .416 Rigby is supposed to be around .586. Mine mics at .585.

The case length for both cartridges is 2.90.

When reloading, I use the same shellholder for both the .416 Rigby and .450 Dakota.

It's not a wildcat; it is a proprietary round.

As loaded by Norma, it propels a 550gr. bullet @2100fps for 5387 ft.-lbs.

A .458 Win. Mag. as loaded by Federal propels a 500gr. bullet @2090fps for 4850 ft.-lbs.

Akrange:

Maybe I am looking in the wrong place but I did not see any .450 Rigby brass at either Graf and Sons or Midway. Graf and Sons does have .450 Dakota brass and so does Midway although Midway is out of stock right now. To the best of my knowledge, the only place to get .450 Rigby brass is at Huntingtons. They carry Horneber .450 Rigby brass and it is about $100 for 20 rounds. Of course, you can always neck up some .416 Rigby brass but a guy ought to have some with the proper headstamp don't you think?

Brother Dave,
You are correct.. I was replying to your concern about Ammo.. The 450 Rigby Rimmless can be made from .416 Rigby Brass Full Lenght sized then Fire Formed..The .416 Rigby brass as you know can be ordred from many outlets.. Go look at that CZ..
