I can't tell you anything about the 1 bore/gauge shotgun, but there is a 4 gauge I have been looking at but have been unable to find sources for ammo or even empty shell cases
You can get 4 bore shells made. Searcy made a 4 bore rifle a few years ago and somebody must have made the brass and dies for him. I suspect you would need to cut your own cardboard wads.

I knew a guy in Co. That made a 4 bore rifle. The only brass I have seen was his and he had turned it all on his lathe. I don't know if I would have fired the beast if given the chance!
i remember reading an article in Outdoor Life a year or three ago about a fellow in England who was making custom break action 4, 3, 2, and 1 bore shot guns and maybe ammunition as well. I can't remember the issue though, but you can bet your bottom dollor it'd be expensive.
Guys What is the legality of these firearms? I seem to remember nothing above 500 caliber being legal, and as I recall, shotguns have some breakpoint too. Do you have to get a special permit from Uncle Sam?
Curtis_Lemay If you can find the article about who is making or made actions(shotgun actions)capable of handling a 4 bore in UK I would very interested. There was a guy in SA (Stewart) who made 4 bore Brass. I can find his address if somebody needs. Arthur Smith in UK is making turned cases for 4 bore.
bongo, et al. I just went through the stack of OL mags i managed to salvage from the trash and I found it in the March 2001 edition page 12. The gentleman who at the time was in the process of creating a 1 bore magnum, is one Alan Myers. According to the article his shop is in Winmarleigh Lancs, England. That's the only contact information in the article. As for ballistics: "In the nearly straight up shots for which these guns are designed...The 1-bore loaded with 12 ounces of shot is expected to be able to punch out to 100 yards to kill a goose...oh there was one other thing: the $20,000 price tag attached to it.

Mate, There is a chap over here who will build a 2 or 4 bore muzzleloader for just a thousand or two dollars.( The price multiplies for a regulated double barrel of course.) For a 1 bore you are looking at hundreds of ftlbs recoil energy from a 50lb gun at least.
Obvioulsy you want it mounted
Karl.

The 4 bore we bought was a red plastic hull that we bought from Old Western Scrounger in Calif. They are good for one shot. I think we bought 100 rounds. We had three 4 bores but sold them a couple of years ago at the Tulsa gun show.
Sir Samuel (Pasha) Baker stated that his muzzle-loading 2-ga. rifle, "Jinnah al Mutfah", (Son of a Cannon) gave him a severe headache and a nosebleed every time he fired it. I understand that he ended up as punchy as Cauliflower McPug!! What fun such a beast would be!! Acytually, what you are talking about sounds like the "punt-guns" used in the 19th Century by market hunters, and which have been illegal in the U.S. for over 100 years.
