.460 G&A Gunsmith Recommendations
I am planning a build of a .460 G&A. A new Win. M70 in .458 WM barreled action will be used. Additions will be a Sunny hill belly drop magazine,
NECG banded front sight, Quarter Rib with one standing sight and a McMillan Safari stock.

I would appreciate any recommendations for Gunsmiths in the U.S. that may specialize in the proper feed and function of .404 based rounds
for this action. Thank you, Don

Don, the ga is merely longer than the accurate reloading carts in my signature. Mine tend to feed just fine from a 458 winmag action as is. I am a little confused on the quarter rib setup, do you mean island rear sight added or a gunsmith that can add a quarter rib? Or even more dollars, an integral quarter rib.

In my case, your rifle would require bedding and stock reinforcement in the wrist along with a rechamber. If you want a more custom build, Duane weibe would be outstanding. As well as stock and bottom metal

Jeffeosso,

For the Quarter rib, I am just looking to remove the stock rear sight and add an after market quarter rib such as Dakotas:

My primary concern is the feed function of the 404 case, I have read of some instances of difficulty with this case and want to make sure no problems arise.

Mine was built by Lex Webernick at Rifles Inc in Texas on a pre-64 Supergrade action. It was accurate and fed well.

Above is your action and stock and bottom metal.
But it is a .500/.338 Lapua Magnum, done by Rusty McGee, Gunsmith.

Your 460 G&A would be child's play for Rusty,
but he does not have that reamer on hand.
Do you?

Thank you Gentlemen for the replies.

This is exactly what I was hoping for.

I have sourced all the parts and will have a reamer made if needed.

I will be contacting these Gentlemen after the holidays and hoping to begin the project buy the end of Feb/March.

I am hoping by late 2013 before the cold hits again I will have pictures and a range report.

Thanks again. Don

Might ask Lon Paul...he was pretty tight with Jack Lott who had a hand in making the original G&As.

Gun 4 Fun
I can tell you first hand that the 404 based rounds will feed beautifully from the stock M-70 action as far as the feed rails go. I had my 404 Jeffery built on a brand new M-70 S.E. CRF (originally chambered for the .416 Rem) action several years ago, and I never had to have the feed rails modified in it at all. I used the stock magazine box as well, and no alterations were required to the feed ramp either. It feeds and functions perfectly from slow careful feeding, to as fast as you can go slam bang feeding.

Wow Mr. Colt Commander you are living my dream. I have not gotten to looking at specifics yet so I will be watching closely and I wish you the best of luck! I was thinking of maybe one of the new (old-style) CZ actions with the pop-up rear aperture and a quarter-rib with a Scout-type scope. Best wishes with your project.

MMM,
I appreciate your sentiment.

Although this is not something I just dreamed up. I have had some of the parts needed for the
project for almost 5 years now. Turns out I will be able to expend some desposible income after the beginning of the year and I will be able to get this project under way.

Good luck, and I hope you can start yours soon.

Jack Lott thought verry highly of the 460 G&A. This is the original write-up on the cartridge in G&A A bit of computer turning will make them readable.

On paper, I like the .460 G&A.

Of course, it has no belt and not much of a shoulder.

A few years back, two PH's I knew had 460's made for their use in the field. Beautiful rifles, but they had problems with headspacing, such that sometimes the guns would go "click" instead of "bang". One of these PH's was almost killed when this happened following up a buffalo.

Out in the field, PH's do not have an unlimited supply of ammo to check rifles out---and 'smiths can be far away.

Any gun to be used in life-or-death must be 100% reliable. Watch your headspace.

Update,

Well, things have changed a bit.

I recieved a return phone call from Mr. Dan Pedersen, which I must say is very much a gentleman and a joy to talk with.
I decided to go with a 90's model M70 Winchester chambered in 7mm STW that I have kept new.

Mr. Pedersen has kindly agreed to take on the project.

To start,he will fabricate a 24" BBl. similar in profile to a 90's model Win .458. It will have a integral Qtr. rib with NECG banded front sight and barrel band and straightened bolt handle. The barreled action will be shipped as soon as the Sunny Hill drop Mag. is recieved by me which I ordered today. It should arrive by the end of the week.

Also purchased today and awaiting shipment are a RCBS 3 set loading dies and 60 pieces of G&A brass from Quality Cartrige.

I am starting to lean towards a custom stock as opposed to the McMillans, but I may get the Mcmillans first so I can play with it a while then ship it off for some wood.

I will try to get some pics of the project in progress if Mr. Pedersen is able.

I had a 460 G&A built by Lex Webernick at Rifles Inc, on a pre-64 Supergrade Model 70 action. It was great medicine for Buff, for sure, using a 500gr Trophy Bonded.

Sunny Hill drop magazine came in.

Thought some of you fellows might like to see one. Its the first I have seen one myself other than a few pic's on the net.

It is getting ready to be shipped this week. It also has the RUM box. Nicely made.

Good move on the RUM magazine, and I like those thick walls..The RUM is more or less based ont he 404 Jefferys case so half the fight is over.

The tough part is those folks that must slam feed the round as hard as they can when testing it. However, I never have been in a situation wherein I had to 'slam feed" a round..I like to think I'm cooler than that in a tight spot, and so far have been. That kind of a torture test is a bit over the top, I found that I could make almost any factory rifle jam sooner or later by that test, and about any rifle for that matter....Working it smartly is good enough for me, and it sure makes a difference.

check your PM's. I have a two-reamer set and gauges for the 450/375 RUM. It was up and shooting on a fellow member's 700. Jim Kobe is doing mine on a Pre-WWII M70 reworked to 375 H&H length.

Easy...
