When you travel with an expensive DR or Bolt you are leaving a lot to chance when you watch your gun case (which could be worth more then 10 grand) travel down that conveyor belt. Is there any insurance you could buy specifically to cover your fine firearms? I realize that should you be unfortunate enough to have your house broken into your home owner insurance should cover all of your firearms. Does travel insurance cover loss or damage of firearms while abroad? Can you buy insurance from the airline? I know I am not the first person to consider this so how do you guys deal with this possibility? Has anyone actually had a problem along these lines?

Talk about a nightmare... You have been planning your hunt for the last year and pawing at your rifles in anticipation. As you load your cases at check in you feel that twinge of fear as the attendant takes them. Sit through the whole flight trying to put the possibility of a problem out of your mind. Get off the plane and wait at baggage claim expecting every next bag to be yours. Suddenly there are no more bags coming an it starts to become clear that your bags and guns aren't comin. You go talk to an attendant who informs you that all your stuff is in Patagonia via Nepal. This is a nightmare that I have even when my rifle is less then 2 grand. I can't imagine how I would feel knowing the object of my affection and at times obsession is on the wrong side of the planet and if something goes wrong with getting it back to me unharmed or at all I am SOL.

Is there anything I can do to at least be sure that if something does happen it will be made all better.

In Australia our premier gun association has a insurance section which i use for travel insurence and add cover for high cost items.
What worries me is that one condition states that the item must be accompanied by you.
This is hard when it goes out of sight down a conveyor..
If the Insurance then passes it onto the airline this could be a problem as they pay claims by $ to kg's for lost luggage, so a payout could be around $600. This is not an ideal situation with any rifle.

Bulldog563,
In New York your homeowners policy only covers guns and jewelry to a maximum of around $1000.00. They specifically mention the guns in the policy. Most organizations NRA, SCI and such have access to additional insurance to cover a specific item. I.E. a $10,000.00 gun. My homeowners policy wasn't that expensive to add my double rifle and it is insured for full declared value anytime, anywhere in the world for any catostrophe.

No good deed goes unpunished.

Cool, I didn't realize that home owner policies covered stuff outside the home.

Yep, you just have to get it added onto your policy. This usually doesn't cost much at all. I have several firearms and some high end electronics stuff declared seperatly on my policy.

you can typically even do this on renter's insurance fwiw.

I have had a $6500 gun lost in other countries more than once. No big deal-just part of flying. My home owner's insurance covers up to $10,000 of gun loss in any country. If losing a high dollar gun will make you act crazy, then for god's sake don't take one on a trip. I have seen grown men act terribly and make every oen around them miserable because they lost soemthing or the airline did soemhting or whatever. It is a risk you take when you travel, so decide if you are willing to take the risk before signing up for the trip

You can get travel insurance that covers your gear to a specific amount. You can also buy a 1 year policy through SCI for any amount you like. You can also get add'l. insurance from most airlines even though you will probably have to talk to a supervisor to get it. One of the most agonizing parts of travel overseas is waiting for that gun case to arrive. EekerConfused
