My 500 Jeffery weighs 12 lbs with scope unloaded and it's not a pussy cat. I wouldn't call it brutal, but recoil is stiff. I've shot full house loads through a 454 Alaskan snubbie. That was brutal. That's not brutal! Brutal is full power 400 gr billets in a 500 S&w with a 12 inch barrel! Heh, sold a Scandium .44 Magnum to a retired physician who insisted on the weight savings for a backpacking gun. He fired but the one shot. There is hope, even when your brain tells you there isn’t. – John Green, author

My demon in recoil is since I busted up my hand, the 458 Lott and up hit that middle finger knuckle as my grip is off center, and that takes me to my knees and my friends roll in the pasture with laughter... I developed a cure for that kind of recoil, I don't shoot that gun twice!! Im good to hunt with my old age limit of the 9.3x62, .338 Win. and 375..I have brakes for the last two that come off and on and a false muzzle to hide the threads.. These days I seldom take the brakes off and I just laugh my ass off at those same friends rolling in the dirt holding their ears...At my age and lifestyle I've already lost most of my hearing anyway!! I wear hearing protection at the bench and practice..I hunt without hearing protection and particlularly DG, I figure Id ranther go deaf than have a elephant sneak up and make me a grease spot. Brakes are worse on your compardres, fortunately group deserve their due. besides God gave us fingers to quell the muzzle blast of big bores. Well, I can tell you all that no perceived whack from recoil can come close to anything if you get a frozen shoulder! My right shoulder started playing up, eventually getting to the point where I could not sleep at night! Anything touching me becomes an agony! I went to see a physiotherapist, and had a few sessions with him, without any results. Then one day I was sighting in a 243 Winchester rifle, and had the most painful recoil I have ever felt! I went to see a specialist, and he said I have a frozen shoulder. He recommended a Cortizon injection, which will kill the pain, and then physiotherapy. It took a while, but finally got cured!

Not in the same league but I've been shooting my 7lb 7x65r with 173 gn loads at 2650 fps a lot recently. Stopped noticing the recoil. Took the 22 out and struggled with lack of recoil.

I have done the same thing with a few kick killer slip on pads. the buttpiece of leather that wraps around increases the width, so the total surface area is increased, so the recoil is spread out over a larger area, and does not seem as hard. I have also slipped some thick fiberboard inside one to increase the lop, especially on my Ruger #1 Tropical. It really seems to tame it quite a bit. On a Win 1885 repro in 45-70 with a crescent buttplate, some fiberboard trimmed to flatten out the crescent, then a kick killer makes it pleasant instead of a horror story JJK

I have a little S&W 342, scandium 38, an enclosed da only 5 shot in 38 special. I don't care to fire a full cylinder in that thing. JJK

Like shooting pistols, I find most folks don't know how to really hold a rifle or pistol and stance is everything. If I can grab the rifle or pistol while you are holding it up and I can move you 1 inch your holding it wrong and recoil will clobber you! On top of that most haven't built up the shoulder muscles to the point they can hold up a rifle without wobbling all over the place. Hence the near universal reliance on shooting sticks! Honestly all recoil complaints are 90% not having the right muscle strength and not holding the gun properly! It really isn't rocket science. Get a good air rifle set up 1 inch targets at 35 yards and shoot reps of 10 shots offhand every day! Your shooting will improve dramatically! Even dry firing a rifle or pistol every day as I do in my shop is a boon to good off hand shooting, not to mention the number of ill fated rock chucks that appear out my shop window in the course of a week, much to the agony of one of my liberal neighbors from down the road, a California transplant with a Yo-gert company..He visited me once, but he won't come back. ^Will dry firing mauser based designs harm anything? CZ's and win 70?
Most unenjoyable gun I have ever shot thus far. After about 10 rounds from my new s&w 340, the web of my hand was bleeding. Switched to 38 spls after that. Come to think of it, I haven't shot it since... The Ruger alaskan in 454 was much more pleasant with the bit of foam insert that's in the backstrap of the factory grips.

But remember , Elmer never met Saeed's Tyranasour Or a 600 OK Or a 12 gaFH. Short of a 4 bore I dunno anything that was available when he was shooting that compares to what's available today. Unless he ran LOTS of full power ammo thru a 460 Whby. Phil Shoemaker : "I went to a .30-06 on a fine old Mauser action. That worked successfully for a few years until a wounded, vindictive brown bear taught me that precise bullet placement is not always possible in thick alders, at spitting distances and when time is measured in split seconds. Lucky to come out of that lesson alive, I decided to look for a more suitable rifle."

The 500 S+W I shot was a 4"X Frame with 400 gr8 bullets pushed by 40 gr8 H110. I shot all 5 rounds. Returned it to its owner and called it quits on me thinking about the 500 Smith.
