Sorry, perhaps a stupid question [Frown] but I cant see how contour # convert to inches or metric. I just dont understand unless some of you can explain it to me.

For example, what meassures have a # 7 contoure?

Is there some converting factor from #:s to inches or metric mm?

My new barrels (.338 and .450) will be 22mm in the front and I guess 30-32 mm at the action side, what contour number would this be?

Feel a little stupid about asking but It seems that we dont use contour # here in europe. (I might be wrong)

Thanks [Smile]

Thomas,

Here is a link that will take you to Pac-Nor barrels contours. They are a big barrel maker in the US.

http://www.pac-nor.com/contours/

It is not really a fixed figure as it can differ between different makers.

Our major barrel maker in Australia follows Shilen (I think?). A barrel that is about .72" (18.3mm) at the muzzle of 26 inch barrel is called a Number 5. That is quite close to what Pac-Nor is using.

Now Weatherby is very different. They have Number 1 for their 24 inch barrel, Number 2 for 26 inch, Number 3 for the 30/378, 338/378,378 and 416 Weatherbys and Number 4 for the 460. The 460 is about the muzzle diamter of your barrel.

Some makers also have a different shape. For example a 416 Weatherby is around .7" at the muzzle which is about the same as our Australian barrel makers Number 5 barrel. However the Weatherby barrel is smaller at the mid way point.

Just curious, it it MAB who is the biggest maker in Australia or ?

It there anyone makeing good cut barrels?

Thomas, barrels profile is a mess, most maker has their own profiles. H-S went the other way soo a 7 H-S is about a 3-4 from shilen. Best way is to find drawings of the barrels and compare.

MAB might be, I don't know. I was referring to Tobler barrels in my post.

Sprinter barrels do cut rifling or at least they use to. Tobler were doing some as well but I think only in 30 calibre.
