For what it is worth, I thought I would pass long the following. I loaded up some .470 Capstick rounds with 84 grains of IMR3031, F215M primers and 500 grain Woodleigh SN bullets. I got an average of 2329 fps with the load with an extreme spread of 5 fps. Accuracy was outstanding. Recoil was not too bad.

As with all load data, this load was safe in my rifle, your rifle may be different. Start low and work up.

Extreme spread of 5 fps for how many shots?
Whether 3, 5, or 10 shots, that's great. tu2

Here is another good old load, it had an ES of 15 fps for a 5-shot string:

H4895 will give same velocity with lower pressure than IMR-3031 in the 470 Capstick,
and it will not have as much temperature sensitivity as IMR-3031.
But, hey I have some 20-year old IMR-3031 that I need to get rid of, so thanks for the load data. tu2

Extreme spread was over five shots:

1 2328 fps
2 2333 fps
3 2330 fps
4 2329 fps
5 2333 fps

All shots went into one ragged hole (albeit at 25 yard off sticks). That is about as consistent a load as I have ever shot. Rifle is a Winchester Model 70 Custom Express that was made by Winchester in .470 Capstick.

Mike, that is not one of the Big 5 Rifles is it??? Reason asking I have two of those, both have
over size barrels, .477 instead of .474. They made 125 of those guns, which I am sure that those, or I believe that those were the first 470 Capsticks out of the Custom Shop. Curious....

Michael, how would I tell? It just has "- Custom Express -" on the floor plate. The outer diameter of the barrel is quite large, I have not mic'ed the inside. Has barrel mounted swivel, front sight hood, rear sight has one standing leaf and two folding. Dual cross bolts with a cheek piece. Rear swivel is inlet to the stock.

No, you don't have one of those Big Five guns, they were all 24 inch guns, and all had the gold rhino on the floor plate and Big 5 on the floor plate. I am sure your rifle is different, and in fact now has me wondering, as 10+ years ago I had a 470 Capstick built, heavier than normal barrel contour, 22 inches, but at the time I sold it, no barrel band, or no rear sights as you state... I am sure its a different rifle than the one I had...

I knew the folks at the Custom Shop quite well at that time, and from day one both of those rifles gave me fits with one thing or another. The Custom Shop stepped out of their area of expertise on those guns... I still have both of them, dressed them up a bit, but they still have the oversized barrels.

Michael, I mic'ed the groove diameter as best I could and it comes out to be .4725 (or thereabouts).

Oh I am sure you are good to go and no worries at all, and did not mean for you to consider being
concerned at all. Just when you said it was a Winchester, this made me think. I would bet pretty good money your gun was built outside the Win Custom Shop, by someone else, and has a good barrel on it.

JWP.. I will never take those rifles out to the field, so I don't intend on a new barrel on either of them. I can't imagine messing with them anymore with the B&Ms established. So they are just big paperweights now.. LOL...... Not even worth a damn to test with either, not with those oversized barrels...... But I have other things to test .474 bullets with anyway.... In fact, I think I still have a Ruger #1 in 470 Capstick as I recall, had one converted by SSK some years ago....
