My Montana action is off to Douglas for a #5 .404 Jeffery barrel. I'm planning on mainly shooting it with iron sights but I've got to figure out which ones to use.

I've got an iron sight only 7x57 that uses the NECG Masterpiece fully adjustable rear sight with a white bead front and it has worked just fine for several deer to date.

I'm thinking about using the same sight on the .404 with a NECG Masterpiece banded front sight.

Anyone using the same setup on a big bore and how does it work for you?

I like ghost ring sights better than an express sight set up. They are quicker to pick up and they do not block half of what you are looking at..

Rick,

I think your choice for rear sights is just fine, that's what I have on my 375H&H and it works well.

As to the front, Jeffe pointed out to me that the NECG Universal front is adjustable for elevation, by about .060". That's a pretty big deal IMHO, and that's what I'll be using on my 470AR. Soon, I hope.

David

Keith, I gotta get me one of them peep/ghost ring sights you keep taling about. I never shot one, but they seem to be popular.

I have used those on another rifle, however as my eyes aged, I also had a rear peep installed on almost all my "irons" rifles.

Currently many peeps are available that attach to the scope bases, I have an EAW on one,a Talley on another, a Warne (not in production) etc.
Just a thought--- Cool

Never liked the looks or function of that design.

I am old fashioned in some respects and choice of sights is one of them.

Here is the set up I have on most of my big bores, this from one of my .375s:

Just file it in for your chosen load and you will be set to go.

I'd thought about a Ghost Ring sight, specifically the Talley base with the pop up peep. But I've got a few rifles with Ghost rings and I find that I enjoy classic irons better (except on an AR-15). Smiler

I'd think that the Universal sight would work well with that sight MRLEXMA posted. I really like the Express style sights with the white index line running up the center.

Where'd you get that sight MR?

That's just an NECG (which is Recknagel) one fixed and one folding blade rear sight with a solid gold wire inlaid in a straight line under the "Vee" - in this case by Mark Penrod.

That is the standing leaf I have on my 404 Jeffery, along with a hooded barrel band front sight. I like it.

I have the same iron sight set up on my Lott. While I like the adjustability of the rear NECG sight I do not like that little "notch" in the blade. I think the sight would be faster to use if the rear blade was shaped more like the non adjustable NECG sights.

I have started putting the NECG rear on all my rifles as standard and for what I use iron sights for it works great. I also use the flip up large bead on the front. For close up work this is a great setup.

Mrlexma sight is also good and I like that too.

I'm sure you have gone to the New England Custom Gun site (Website) but some other folks might like to go there and brouse. Click on the toy chest if you want to see some interesting options.

X2 as they say. I shoot scopes on all rifles, that is why my use of the NECG sights works just fine with me. If I have to have irons then I intend to be close, so it works great.

Michael,
I always wondered what that flip up front sight looked like, all the catalog photographs were hard to make out. Looks like a nice unit.

Judge G,
I've spent a good bit of time looking thru the NECG website. Very nice stuff. Smiler

After having Lasic surgery on my eyes a few years ago I'm seeing better than ever before even when corrected. I'm finding it fun to hunt with iron sights and have taken a few deer here in WV that way. In fact I'm leaving for South Africa this afternoon for 10 days of plains game hunting and all I'm taking is a Husqvarna 9,3x62 with the issue iron sights. We'll see how that works out. Cool

Thanks for the input. While I've used the adjustable sight it's just not quite right and after seeing MR's sight I believe I'll drool look thru the NECG websight a bit more before making my decision.

Good luck Rick and have fun! I am going to have to do the lasic surgery one day soon! My eyes are not up to doing too much iron work past 50 yds at most.

I don't like the U notch in the NECG sight. They will sell you a blank blade that you can file in a vee without the notch.
