cobradFirst time out with .458 WHEEE HAAA!
Picked up my Remington Custom Shop Stainless Safari .458 Winny today. Ran right down to the range with 20 rounds of light loads-300 gr. bullets pushed to around 2600 by 72 gr. H4198. Recoil makes my .300 feel pretty tame, but still was not uncomfortably heavy. To start I fired 7 shots offhand at 50 yards for 4.2". At 100, off the bench, I fired a 3-shot .87, followed by two shots cutting into the same hole, then I choked and pulled the 3rd about 3" high. I'm going to practice with this load until I feel I have it handled, then on to what I hope to use for an Alaskan load; 400 gr. Northforks at somewhere around 2400.

ACRecurveA 458 will definitely get your attention quicker than a 300! But what fun to shoot...enjoy!
Good hunting,
Andy

458RugerNo1Wow, sounds like that load can be left alone as-is if you're shooting sub-MOA on your first time to the range (irons or scope?).
I've found the .458 WM very easy to work with and not too difficult to master even off the bench with full-power 500's if you hold it correctly and snug it up to you tightly.
My practice/plinking bullet is the 405gr Rem JFP at just over 1900 fps. This is actually a formidable load for nearly all North American game too of course.

cobradThe rifle has a Tasco Titan 1.5-6 on it. I'm using the Remmy 300 gr. HP's. I want to see how they work on ground hogs later.

Good cheap bullets for practice.

458RugerNo1They should be up to the task for groundhog work, lol...

Hog KillerGo to the 405gr Remmy, 45-70 bullet for a heavier practice bullet. Save the NFs for hunting. The 405gr is my practice bullet in my Lott. They work just fine on hogs too.

cobradThat's my plan Hog Killer, but I'm going to continue with the 300's for a while until I feel I have this level mastered.

RangerBobJeff,
Would you mind listing your load of RL-7 and the 405gr Remington?
Some people are hesitant to list charge weights, and I understand that. But if you have no objections, I could use the head start.
If you have velocities, that would be helpful also.
Thanks,
Bob.

Hog KillerFor my Lott and the 405 Remmy's, I am using IMR-4895. (Cause I have a whole bunch of it.)
With 68.0grs I get 2112fps from a 24" barrel. Shoot great for my rifle.
