Did some shooting with my cz .458 lott this weekend gone and I did not feel it was to much more than my .416 Rigby.

I like the lott it's a versatile kind of round,

I tried to different loads

510 gr win softs

400 gr speer Flats.

Both with AR2208 80 gr & 83 gr respectivly set of with a Fed 215M primer & Hornady case.

I felt the 400 gr loads booted more than the 510 gr loads. I shot a 1.8" group with 2.5x leupold scope at 100 yards (Iam happy with this)would not mind seeing if groups shrink with normal WLR primer.

The roo's out smarted me this weekend and I never got a look in and I also missed a hare & a couple of rabbits with it.

The barrel band & sling I felt made it difficult to keep steady off hand for small game as it sort of got a sway up from side to side with the sling movement [Confused]

I will be out in 2 weeks again to see how those speer 400 gr go on grassy's at .458 Lott speeds.

Rifle feeds the 400 gr speers "slicker than goose shit" as Ray would say.

PC,

Sounds like you had a good time shooting. Just started shooting my Lott. It's a rechambered 458 Win Model 70 and is a tad light sans scope. I put a Dead Mule recoil reducer in the butt and that balanced it pretty well. It also slows the recoil way better than the mercury reducers. Let us know how it performs on a charging grassy!

Good Hunting,

AC,

what bullets are thinking of trying ??

I have also ordered a packet of woodleigh 500 gr .458 bullets which will be my "amchair African load"

Adding the weight to an M70 would have been a good idea, I certainly would not want my cz any lighter than it currently is.

I like the M70's but there really expensive in Australia when compared to a cz like I mean $600 odd difference between a cz & M70.

I think the .458 Lott is a versatile kind of round and I am only 11 rounds into my .458 Lott career.

Woodleigh also make a 400 gr protected point which would make for a good long ange lott load.

What exactly did you have done to the CZ,was it just a rechamber job or did you have other work done also?

DD,

I had it rechambered to .458 Lott with a clymer reamer, I had the rails polished/action done for perfect feeding. I had an extra two cross bolts added for & aft the mag box as well as maintaining the standard cz cross bolt behind the tang. I had it bedded in devcon up to & including the barrel lug, and floated for the last part of the forend.

I also had a barrel band added and the forend slin swivel removed my smith kindly placed a piece of Buff horn in that hole where the sling swivel was so it looks nice.

I like the hogs back stock I find them good so I was not bothering to swap it out.

I reckon the cz .458 winnie turn into the perfect lott with a few mods, 5 in the mag one in the spout for a six shooter and all at a good weight for a .458 Lott.

I have also added a 2.5x compact leupold in warne qd's.

Thanks Jeffo,

no beauty spots but it did ram my thumb into my nose on one occasion while shooting at a hare (Iwas being a little aloof withit) Us big bore shooters can get a little cocky at times and then you get reminded...... [Wink]

funny thing about being cocky... cost me TWO brow cuts and a bruised cheek...

you should see my son shoot the 500... he's 5'8, 150lbs... and whacks em in... and then, of course, all the "meat" at the range wants to give it a try....

ah, well, too bad it aint a t-rex!!

PC... can you get winchester 510gr sp for reloading? Here in the states I have never been able to get some, and they have always made a great deer bullet for my 450.

Small fry,

A mate from the forum gave me 5 of them to give to my smith as dummy's to perfect feeding. Apparently there one of the hardest bullets to get to feed due to the large amount of lead and ther blunt configuration. I thought if I get the hardest to feed projectiles all else will be easy. It feeds them and the blunt speer 400 grainers very smoothly.

How do the win 510 gr bullets perfrom on game are they hard or soft as far as bullets go ??

I to would like to get some in quantity.

Maybe Con who gave them to me has a source ??

Guys,

As this recoil reducer is a mechanical piston (per Brownells' description), anyone know how a scope will hold up to this?

Just wondering,

-Steve

PC,

I'm using Hornady 500 gr RN's right now. Am planning on working up another load with Barnes X 400 grainers and some Barnes 500 grain solids. Will likely get a load for some hard cast gas-checked bullets, too.

Steve,

The Dead Mule was recommended to me by Edd Wosslum of Evolution USA. I have a 400 Tembo with a Leupold VX2 1x4 and a Dead Mule. It's a wildcat--404 Jeffery shortened about 0.1" and necked to .400. Shoots 350 grain Barnes X's at 2350 so its like shooting a hot-loaded 375. Scope's in fine shape. Don't have my Lott scoped so can't comment other than to say the Lott's have a rep for destroying scopes.

Just in case someone wants to tell me that Barnes doesn't make a .400 cal bullet----Randy Brooks makes them specially for Edd and let's him distribute them to those he builds rifles for. The cartridge was developed by Edd Wosslum, Randy Brooks, and Kevin Robertson and is relatively new. It could probably be loaded much, much hotter but was developed for single rifle safaris where the bag includes dangerous game. It has taken plains game out to 300 yards and has accounted for several Cape buffalo, too. Several articles about it were published last year in Accurate Rifle.

Good Hunting,

What sort of barrel band did you have installed? How is it installed? Does it require removing the front site and/or reblueing?

Sounds nice! I have the cz in 375 H&H. Love it to death.

Citori,

I am not sure of the brand, but the fornt sight had to be removed and I assume it was soldered. My smith has done an impeccable job of attaching it at any rate.

The cz's are just amazing, my missus has been moved to the sofa and my cz's are in the other side of the bed [Big Grin]

AC have you tried that Hornady soft on game ??

I have good results with the .375 300 gr RN Hornady on thin skinned stuff. That .400 Tembo sounds interesting to by the way.

Thanks Andy!!

I'm still waiting for my testes to drop enough for me to get up the nerve to shoot mine [Big Grin] .

In reality I can't wait to shoot it. I just got it Friday and haven't had time to take it out.

I'm going to try an take it out this weekend. We'll see if it needs a bit of 'taming'. I'll also call Leupold to see what they say.

Take Care,

-Steve
