Has anyone been loading for this caliber in the Ruger #1. I'd be interested in what kind of velocity and accuracy your getting. Toying with buying one if I can find one with nice wood.

I suspect with todays brass you could crank it up a little over the double rifle loads, but I see no reason to go beyond 2200 FPS with a 400 gr. bullet..

Let us know when Hornady is shipping dies to customers so we can all order some dies and get our 400 grainers up to 2400 fps and 300-grainers up to 2700 fps in our Ruger No.1's, using the Hornady brass and bullets.

There have been a few on Gunsamerica.com with very nice wood. Norsman Arms usually has one in stock, and they are great guys to work with.

RIP,
Will got his 450/400 3inch dies from Hornady just a couple of days ago. See his thread on the Double Rifles Forum.

$83 for the dies direct from Hornady: 800-338-3220

That is cheap enough to make one want to pay for next-day UPS delivery. thumb

I agree with Ray 100% on this. I have killed caribou, wild pigs, baboon, warthog, zebra, cape buff, bull elephant, and lion with my 450/400 3 1/4", shooting 400 gr Woodleigh Softs [Solids for the elephant] at @ 2200fps.

My longest shot was on a caribou at @150 yards.

More velocity is not necessary.
