To make a long story short, I was on the phone to the local Gun store about buying a secondhand CZ 550 in 375 H&H and ended up ordering A Stainless No 1 in 458 Lott, its going to cost me $1500 and a five month wait, but the countdown has begun!
Due to the rise of the Aussie dollar against the greenback they have come down by $200, I should order one in each calibre, but I dont think the Wife would agree with that theory [Frown]

Cheers [Smile]

choppa - had my #1 in 458lott for 2 years. Lately been shooting 600 gr Barnes at 2000fps. Only animal I killed was a large bison. What are you planning to use yours for?

Gday Cole,

My #1 will probably account for more Kangaroo's than anything else! no, but seriously, I plan to use it on Sambar ( the largest Deer in Australia)
Goats, the odd scrub Bull, Pigs and such.
I am looking forward to playing around with the 458 Lott, every thing from cast bullets to the 600 grainers, tell me your thoughts on the rifle/catridge combination? the worst thing is the wait, I dont think that there would be too many of that rifle/catridge combo over here in Aus

PC,

Yeh, the waiting gives you the shits!
PC, I will be very interested to see the results with the 458 Lott using Mulwex powders, what will you start with, AR2207 or AR2206? I use that in my 450 Marlin and I see that it is used in the 458 Win Mag, so should suit well, its annoying sometimes that we dont have the powder selection the States has. [Frown]

Cheers

PS those 300gn Sierras should be interesting at 2800fps or so on Roo's [Eek!]

Choppa,
You'll probably find that a fair few of the Mulwex powders will be suitable in the Lott. It'll end up being which one does the best job for you in your application. From AR2207 through to AR2208 (including Benchmark 1&2, AR2206, AR2206H) should be okay. I started with max loads for the 458WM using AR2208. Got to 79gr with no problems, all behind a Woodleigh 500gr soft. Next loads are going from 79gr to 83gr, they start compressing at 83gr. I've loaded with AR2206 as well but haven't fired or chronographed those yet. Instead of the Sierra 300gr you may want to try the Taipan 300gr SSP, more aerodynamic and cheaper as well.
Cheers...

Who has tried AR2207 for the .458 Lott, I use that in my 45/70 and have a bit of it on hand.

I am still deciding what bullet to load for, I am considering the 480 gr woodleigh at the minute.

I wish we could get a cheap option in a 500 gr .458 bullet I mean whopping grassy's with woodleigh's is a bit rich. Taipan .416 cal 400 gr bullets work really well on them.

I shoot 300 to 400gr bullets in the 45/70 so for my second .458 cal rifle I want to step up ibullet weight.

Con let us know if you have used AR2207 at all.

Choppa I will post the load I work up when I get all the gear together.

PC,
Bob's got my CZ ready to go I just need to get down to Melbourne to pick it up. Once done I'll finish off my load development with AR2208 and AR2206 and then do some playing with AR2207 and Benchmark 1 as I've got a fair bit of both.
In the 45/70 I'm only using AR2207 with the 300gr projectiles, all my 400gr loads use AR2208, 57gr gets an even 1770fps and makes the Marlin dance! Watch out for the AR2207 (300gr) in the ADI manual, I reduced the max load by 5gr and still got 2200fps and stiff recoil, extracted easily though. I'm sort of scared to push that load any higher! I reduced the load down to 50gr and get an easy 2000fps with the Taipan 300gr FN.
Cheers...

PS: Capstick dies arrived last week. Local importer quoted 4-6 weeks delivery, CH/4D did it direct in 5 days! Makes you wonder doesn't it?

CHOPPA How large is a sambar deer?
I talked to a outfitter today who had a hunter ,(P.H. from R.S.A.), who shot an elk with his 4
58lott. I guess he uses it for everything!

Cole,
A BIG stag may go 270kg (600lb), hind closer to 150kg (350lb) live-weight. Averages would be less. Hunting is generally in thickly forested areas. You've got them in the States as well at St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge, Florida.
Cheers...
