I have had really good and consistent results with RL 15 in the 458 Lott. I also use RL 15 with heavy bullets in 458 Winchester (450s-500s), and in 470 Capstick. All have given consistent results and good velocity in my rifles. Pushing a consistent 2250-2275 fps depending on the bullet, 500 Swift, 500 Woodleigh, 500 Barnes Solid. If I was still carrying and shooting a Lott I would like to take a look at H4895 and AA2230, but being tied up with other things these projects are way on the back burner.

RL 15 is a good all around powder for 416 and up. I am currently using it to an extent in my 500 MDM too. However top loads in that come from H322.

I use H4895 and shoot the 500 grainers at 2275fps.I've shot coated and uncoated bullets with the same load and find that my moly coated bullets, at this velocity, are easier on the primers.I also get numerous reloadings with my cases.I've also fired these rounds,a few times, when the barrel became to hot to touch and all went well.I have not tried Rel.15 but did try a few others and settled on this one.It fills the case up really well, allows for a perfect 500gr aframe, and Woodleigh bullet seating and has less pressure. It's nice to know you have a powder from the Hogdon "extreme" series and that its burn rate should remain stable during exreme temperatures.

MTM,

I'm a novice with big bore reloading (I have reloaded most of my adult life for deer and elk rifles and handgun) but Reloader 15 worked well for my .458 Lott with the 500 grain Barnes TSX and Banded Solids. There is a lot of data here on AR for reloading for heavy rifles with the search function. Good luck!

I get good results with W748 aprox 83grns and Hornady 500grn interlocks. This is my plinking load. Quick loads says it will go 2300fps. Haven't set up the chrony to confirm this yet. Pressure is on the high end at 61,403psi but in cold oregon it isn't much of an issue.

I have always stuck with IMR 4320 for the 500-grain bullets in the Lott and not had cause to look elsewhere.

I just checked the IMR 4320 at 83grn in Quick Loads and you get aprox 2260fps out of a 23" tube for 59268 psi. I might have to give it a try once we get powder back in our state. Thanks for the heads up.

Great Post MTM

748 is a good powder, but it can be temperature sensitive, for those that are heading to higher temps may want to back off of max a bit or use a different powder.

Great to hear about the 748 load. I've got a bunch of that too. Not too much in the way of high temp problems in B.C. Now, one more silly question. I know its been beat to death to so please don't jump down my throat. My gun is a Safari Mag. with the 2 crossbolts. I don't have time before the weekend to bed it, can I fire some test rounds on the bare wood or sould I wait and bed it. I'm inclined to go ahead but if anyones had problems I'd appreciate hearing about it.

O.K. shot it on Fri. Deffinatly goes bang. Open sights are 5" low at 25 yds! Thats useing the 300 yd. leaf. Gues I'll have to get my guy to make me a taller leaf for the back. I'll check the front but it looks to be a fairly low one already. Seems kinda silly to market a gun the the open sights are useless on.

I would bed the rifle before making any changes to the sights. It could bring the POI up 3 or four inches.
