Always wanted one. I always thought most were not shooters. Where did you find yours?

Nice, I first learned of the 43 Mauser from Ross Seyfried's article in Rifle or Handloader... thought it would be fun to load for and shoot.

Are those BP loads you are shooting or are they smokeless?

I sold mine last year at the Houston show. It was in an honest 99% condition. I'm already regreting it even though I did get VERY good money for it because of the condition & all matching #s. [Frown]

Alf: That rifle is in just lovely condition. I got better accuracy out of an 1871 I had than the 71/84. The round was a bit of a throat fouler, but not as bad as the 11.15 Austrian Werndl.

Hey guys,

I started a .43 Mauser thread...I'll move to this one.

I inherited mine from my Dad. He bought it new and unfired back in the early 60s or late 50s. It was till packed in a cosmoline type substance, had been stored in barrels he told me. He just refinished the stock.

He never even fired the thing until I was 12-13 years old and we found some CIL ammo in a gunshop in Alaska of all places !

It is 99% condition. Bore is perfect. Shoots like a dream, and is amazingly accurate. I shot a 3 shot group at 200 yards with it (when a teenager) off the bench that was pushing 2 inches.

I shot up the 40 rounds of CIL ammo (385 gr lnfp at 1385 fps) and am now reloading with IMR 4198 (33 grains)behind a 385 grain bullet I got from Buffalo Arms. Still very accurate out to about 400m on 1ft to 2ft sized rocks.

Only problem is the spring on the rear site has broken. Numrich lists them but is always out of stock.

Anybody know of any other suppliers for parts?

I'll be carrying the rifle on our first annual "Pre WW2 Military Rifle Deer Hunt" this fall. I'll be in the company of a 03 Springfield, an WW2 vintage M1 Garand, and a .303 Enfield.

I got my 71/84 earlier this year. What a piece, the last of the military rifles that shows some hand crafting.

Came with two boxes of Dominion CIL and one Imperial CIL. Shot three rounds of the Dominion, had case splitting right at the base of two of the rounds. Have fired eight rounds of the Imperial, they are fine. Go figure.

Forgot to mention, with the gun also got a box of original cartridges (which I won't shoot). 10 rounds, headstamped E * 8 87 and E * 9 87. The box reads:

10 fcharfe Patronen M/71
Augefertigt am 20 Apr. 1888
im Artillerie-Depot zu Erfurt
Pulv
11 84 1
S.87
Zundhutchen.

I have one that was unfortunately "bubbaized", however the bore is pristine. I don't cast, so purchase bullets from Buffalo Arms. I've shot both the "Spanish" .439, and "Mauser" .443, both 370 grains, I think. In mine, the "Spanish" appear to be marginally more accurate, with a modest load of smokeless, and a tuft of dacron. I get about 3" groups at 100, and corresponding 6" groups at 200 (with LOTS of elevation!) It would probably do better with a load/bullet combo worked up with black, but I haven't tried. A real blast to shoot...

Pedastal, I want to load black powder in mine. Where is a source for brass?

I picked up the 71/84 after reading a couple of books on Lettow Voerbeck's campaign in Africa during WWI. Actually wanted a M71, but they are not to be had. -Fred
