Question:
I have picked up a classic Model 70 from a fellow forum member. great piece! Now time to mount one of my available scopes.
There are not open sights on this barrel, it is only going to have a scope. black, matte, synthetic.
Krieger barrel, bedded and pillared Mcmillan synthetic stock. Model 70 classic CRF action redone by Penrod.

This is not going to be a primary long-range rifle, as I have 300WBY and 280AI for longer range hunts. but hope to use it on plains game.

I list the scopes I am deciding between. All have heavy post (German 4 reticel) or medium post with medium wire crosshairs.

You can also tell me why, of course.

Choices:
Swarovski 6X fixed
Kahles 4X fixed
Kahles 2X7 variable
Swaro 3X9X36 variable
Swaro 3X10X42 variable

I would go with the 2x7 K as a primary, and since the rifle does not have any iron sights I would use the 4xK as a back up. Both scopes in QD mounts.

From this list I would pick the 2-7.

However, before mounting a scope I would mail the rifle back to Mr. Penrod with a letter explaining that the iron sights are missing and requesting that he make an effort to solve that problem. Smiler

For the moment, I mounted the 2-7 Kahles to the range this afternoon to see how she shoots.

Still appreciate any more input, specially the fixed vs. variable info.

I think I would like a 2-7 on my own .375 due to the versatility......

For this rifle, and your location listed as Colorado, I picked the Fixed-6X...it just sounded right for a 'BLACK RIFLE'.

I love BLACK RIFLES! gunsmile

I agree with the crowd....2x7 Kahles, hands down. I put a 1.5x6 zeiss on my ruger several years back and thought it might be a bit low but found that I usually leave it on 2-2.5 while hunting and that's been more than enough from up close and personal to any reasonable 375 hunting range.

I have a 6x on my Sako 375 H&H so I thought it would be good for a Penrod 375 H&H.

The Kahles ah 2-7 that I have lacks eye relief even for a 260 Rem. There is no way that I would put it on a 375!

Before I vote what's the eye relief on all of your scpoes? I am leaning towards the Swaro 3-9 if it's near 4" at 4X.

Todays the 6th of July. Did you cut your eye with the Kahles?

No cuts above eye. but I used a bit of sissy bag protection for most shots. I did manage to make some tight groups in the paper, from bags and a bench. shot .75 for three shots at 100 yards with factory Remington boolits. also shot about three times that with Nitrex Speer boolits (clearly not the load of choice for this rifle).

Thanks for good input.

For me a Leupold 1.75-6x is perfect on a .375 or .416. Anything big enough to use a .375 on can be shot at any range on 6x.

If you want to treat yourself try the new Zeiss 1.5X6 with 30mm tube. Otherwise just about anything you like will work on the 375. Wouldn't want anything less than Leupold for Africa but German is better.
