Yep!
Price way out of line in my opinion but look someone is paying it. I would save my money at that price and get 2 Ruger Express rifles, and I am a big Win fan, just not that big when you are talking about twice the price.

I think it's simply SUPPLY and demand and the supply of that style gun (NIB) is extremely low!

About two years ago I got one [Win 70 375 H&H] for a customer from Jerrys for something around 475/500. Was so impressed I got one for myself. Well--the customer reneged so I got two now. Think I`ll keep them around too.

Aloha, Mark

The .375s and 458s in that model are bringing about $1500 or so. The .416s bring $2000 to 2200. as they are rare indeed. I have sold two 416s in the last couple of months. I have one for sale now for $2000. It is new and is a 1998 model cfr.

There has been a big jump in gun values lately, has anyone priced a Win 54 lately? or a savage 99EG or F model. Even the Rem 721 and 722s have gone up. Ahhh, but I can live with inflation.

The 375's (NIB) disappear in a heart beat @ $1500. Most are going for very close to $2k.
The 458's bring less.

Really I think we are all a little fuzzy here because the value of the dollar is changing very fast. An unstable currency makes everything hard to keep up with.

Lets see I got a tank of gas this afternoon regular @ $3.06/gal x 22gal = roughly $68 so a $1500 classic rifle costs about 22 tanks of gas? The gas disapears pretty fast and the rifle will last for a life time ? How's that for the muddled thought process of a gun junkie

I am very happy with my M70 Safari Express in 416 Rem Mag (2000 model). Mine feeds flawlessly, and will put 3 shots in one enlarged hole at 100 yds. Kind of like Real Estate, they ain't making any more........

Topped with a Leupold VX III 1.75 X 6 I put it in the same catagory with a Master Card, priceless. thumb

i bought a .416 m70 crf last summer for $1400.... NIB.... it got christened 2 weeks ago with 400 gr barnes solids....i like it better that my .375 h&h....the ..375 is a push feed, but no problems with feeding, even when rapid firing.... like 3 shots in under 8 seconds....i made a deal for a whitworth interarms .458 for $600.... its not the winchester, but it shoots really well....other than a hard recoil pad...

What will happen to the prices when the M70 is again being produced, and of a better quality?

hart, I seriously doubt that'll ever happen and have the rifles priced competitively. When the then new Mod 70's first came out again, you get a few good ones, and the next batch is AFU'd beyond what the factory wanted to handle. When somebody rushes a "hot" item out because of demand, quality control goes out the window. The same thing happened with CZ, some good rifles and the rest was crap.

Yes, guns have taken a big jump, and some of the old timers like the Win. 54 and Rem 721,722 have hiked.

Wait 6 months and a $2000 Win in 416 Rem will fetch a lot more than that IMO, its a good market to invest in IMO...

Is the M70 coming back? I have heard some talk (mainly on this forum) about a South Carolina factory opening. Any updates?? It seems like these prices could support bringing them back.

Dosn't surprise me - especially a NIB one.

Dr's have been doing that type of price jump for years, it was only a matter of time before other select models followed.

Of te Model 70's, at least over here in Aust,
the 375H&H and then 458 are the 2 most desirable, even more so than Pre 64's which went up and then dropped as people thought they weren't as good as they said.

I recently purchased two perfect, mint, NIB M70's in .416 for $1490 and $1600. I am not sure about the market for them or for the .375's but I needed the .416's for an upcoming hunt.

I have not heard if Winchesters will be made again, I assume they will, then we all have fun with the debate about pre-64's vs. Classics vs. the new ones.

Much like the Ford Mustang.

I do know know that the .458 seems the most common M70 bigbore on GB. There are about 4-.458 to every one .375h&h.

dogcat, great buys on the .416.

Matt from Williams Firearms Company seems to be in the know and has insinuated that they will be produced again. Apparently they will be produced by someone after the old contract expires.

Bought a .375 H&H LH Classic December of '05 for a little less than $1100.00, tax, tag & license.

The same gun shop a year later appraised the rifle with a VX III 1.5x5x20 German #4 at $3000.00 for insurance purposes. Had no idea Winchester was folding when I bought it for an African trip, but the rifle proved extremely accurate and dependable, with four animals to its credit. I'm glad I bought it and won't let go of it for a long time.

The shop owner, a well respected, long-time Winchester customer, has also been unofficially told the rifle will once again see production.

Just prior to the plant closing announcement, the available M70 Safaris were dirt cheap at dealer costs. On a tip, I cherry picked a 416Rem from a shipment two weeks before the announcement.

It's a double edge sword. Knowing how little I paid for my 416Rem, I'd be hard pressed to pay much for another. Flip-side, I wouldn't take $4,000 for the one I have.

So I guess the old pricing no longer applies. They are now worth as much as someone is willing to pay or part w/ one. Even when FN gears up after the contract expires, I'm sure someone will pay top dollar to get a "classic" from the now defunct Winchester plant. But, I'll keep mine.

I really hate when guns go "antique". You pay a high price for something that will work well and then it spikes. Around here you could hardly find the CFR even when they were in production. At $2,400 and going up to who knows where, a lot of us less well off will be nervious walking around with it in the woods. I hope someone who can manufacture it in mass at a good quality takes over. I'd rather lose any "profit" I made on the ones I own and be able to obtain more / replacements without searching for the holy grail. It's getting to be as dumb as owning a Harley. Roll Eyes

Increasing prices will only speed the return of the M-70.....fear not.....the market for #2,400 M-70s is extremely small.....we all want one but if you have one.....there's only a very few that will nibble at that price.....the letters NIB does help however!

I bought a mint condition model 70 classic in 416 Rem. in December '06 for $899 at Cabela's in Glendale. It was in their gun library and I think they had mis-priced it because the gun library manager was amazed at the price. The cheapest I have seen one at Cabela's since then is about $2,200.

I bought a like new 375 H&H in November of 05 for my first African trip with very nice wood...for 875.00 shipped. I do think that when the Ruger Hawkeye's in the 375 Ruger are better known it will deflate the model 70 a bit... and even more so if it comes out in a 416 Ruger, which is inevitable. Ruger will take full advantage of the model 70 dilema. Sooner or later the Winchester Brand will re-surface and I'm just waiting for the price deflation and watching people scramble to get rid of their "gold" Safari Classics. Anyone remember how much AR15's were a few years ago??? Now they are dirt cheap and everyone and their brother is making them. The model 70's had their day in the sun.
