The Federal "Hi Energy" or Hornady "Heavy Magnum" loads in .375 H&H should equal or possibly even exceed the .375 Wby, if you like those bullets.

First, what do you intend to use the rifle for? Second, what level of recoil are you accustomed to? Third, do you handload? The answers to the above will provide a good basis for the decision. George

On arriving in Botswana for my first safari, the first question that my PH asked was "did you bring your brother's 375?". The same question was asked by a second Ph who shared our camp. Curious, I asked why they were concerned about my brother's gun. It appears that he had a fairly light weight model 70 in 375 WBY. The combination of weight and caliber resulted in such savage recoil that his PH routinely hid David's 375 WBY ammo so that he had to use the PH's 375 H&H ammo. Both PH's had shot the rifle and said that they would never do it again. I've since inherited the rifle and can't decide if I want to keep it as is, or rebarrel it to 300 H&H.

Befus, The .375 H&H already has enough velocity for dangerous game, going higher just means you have more to worry about in bullet failure. I would stick with the .375 H&H -- there is a reason it has continued #1 for about a century. I have shot game out to 250 yards with my rifles, and I didn't miss more velocity there either. Terry, I would convert that .375 Weatherby to .400 H&H. jim

Go with the 375 Weatherby if you want to cut the resale value in half

I used a .375 H&H on my one trip to Botswana, of course it did everything it was supposed to. But there is one curious sideline to the .375 Weatherby: you get three different energy levels with factory ammo. If you use factory .375 H&H standard loads, you lose maybe 100-150fs as the cases expand to fit the oversize chamber. If you use the Hi Energy factory loads, you get more or less standard .375 H&H performance. If you use Weatherby factory .375 W loads, you get 100-200 over standard .375 H&H. Of course you better have your sight adjustments all figured out to get any benefit from such (theoretical) versatility .....

Go with the H&H,I have the 375 ultra and it's great but I firmly believe if you want more killing power than the H&H you must go up in caliber the faster 375's give you more range, and the H&H gives you plenty of range

I have a 375 H&H and it is indeed a great cartridge. Took it to Africa and hardly had to break out the other rifle. THe Weatherby is one of Craig Boddington's favorite cartridges and I have to agree. The fact that you CAN shoot H&H out of a Weatherby is indeed an added bonus. It does give you almost 200fps more and that translates into less guesswork at longer ranges. It is selling well with Weatherby, perhaps too well. When Weatherby brought out the 378 to replace the 375, it offered none of the advantages and all of the disadvantages in brutal recoil and muzzle blast. I think you won't be disapointed with the Weatherby. jorge
