Would one of you kind gentlemen who own a Whitworth 375 H&H please give me an indication of the barrel countour and the muzzle diameter at its usual 24" length? The ones I have held feel light, or perhaps just well balanced. Thanks, Jeff

I no longer have mine but as I remember they are light compared to many current barrel manufacturer minimums. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

At the tip of the forend, the diameter of mine is 0.818 in 2.5 inches forward of the forend is 0.796 in 4 inches from forend is 0.766 in muzzle just below edge radius is 0.675 in It's more of a medium bore sporter contour than a typical big bore barrel. Agree with Oday450's numbers. Whitworth barrels in .375 H&H and .458 Winmag, that I possess, utilize the same contour. This would be best approximated by a generic No.4 Sporter Contour that finishes up at .650" diameter at 26" length, and about .675" when the taper is cut off at 24". IMHO, that barrel contour is minimal for a .458, just right for a .416, and more than heavy enough for a .375.

Thanks, all. What explains the light-in-hand feel of those Whitworths then?

They are not a heavy rifle. I remember that mine weighs about 7.5 lbs without scope or rounds. The .458 is too light - I really notice the recoil! "Cleverly disguised as a responsible adult."

This is exact why you dont need a 375Ruger to achieve a light and responsive 375H&H gun. The industry mentality is to build and market the H&H like a elephant rifle. In reality its more a medium or heavy medium caliber. Browning made Mauser 98 based 375H&H back in the 70's, same specs. Very nice feel. What would you have if you trimmed the Whitworth back to 20 or 22 inches?
That would be a sweet gun.

For me the Whitworth was always the prefect feel for a 375 bolt rifle. Since the M70 action is just a touch lighter provided you can get a barrel maker to cut you the lighter contour there is no reason you couldn't make a M70 feel the same way. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

I agree that they feel "right" which is why I asked. However, I didn't know the action on a M70 is a little bit lighter than the Whitworth.

I have an Interarms Mark X in .375 H&H with Whitworth barrel, 24". This gun has elegant wood, express sights, and handles like a dream. I have also installed quick release Leupold mounts/rings with a 1.5x5 Leupold scope. I'm not sure why, but this gun is perfectly balanced. I have it for sale since I am switching almost exclusively to DR's.
