Or does it not matter much for close range Deer and Black Bear hunting in N.Y. ( 100 yds max with most under 50 yds) And if rate is of no concern hear who gets the better rating , Marlin or Winchester?

Faster is typically better.

Is the 30/30 win a big bore? But to your question, replace the 20" bbl with a 10" bbl, 1 in 2 twist, with the tube magazine as is.

Since you probably want a serious answer, I don't know what is more appropriate for the 30/30, but the faster the twist rate the better it will stabilize a heavier bullet. There are calculators that will tell you the ideal twist rate, if you search the forum you might find a link to one.

I also think that you have your twist rates really messed up, where did you find those? :-) I think that Marlin uses a 1 in 10 On their 30/30.

Many feel that faster twist rates are less susceptible to tumbling during dramatic media density changes (like when a bullet leaves air and enters animal). In other words, they seem to penetrate straighter.

Hornady{Vol.2} lists their 30/30 test rifle as being a Win.Model 94 with a twist of 1 turn in 12 inches,I checked my Marlin (made in 1968},it has a twist of 1-10.

The twist rate of 1-38 is the early Marlin 444.I believe the Win.444 does have a faster twist.

The rule is the faster the twist the longer bullet it will stabilize,works for any caliber big,medium,or small.

Wow my mistake guys i was asking about the .44Magnum, dont know what made me type 30/30. I am tring to come pare the marlin 1894 with the winchester 94 trailsend rifle.

This becomes more of an issue with bullets over 240gr. The longer the bullet, the more spin required. This is why Marlin went to a 1 in 20 twist on the .444, they should have done the same with the 44 mag.
