Thanks to all of you who have been so helpful in this endeavor. I bought this older Searcy built on a BSS action. Light practice loads were a delight, and 106gr of IMR4831 under a Woodleigh 500gr bullet produces a very satisfying thump. 2100-2150 fps. My last two shots at 50 yards were an inch and a half apart. Other groups not as good, but shooting off a tripod with a 20mph headwind didn't do much to steady me.
I've been waiting weeks for a break in the South Dakota weather for this, and it was worth the wait. 40 degrees today, if a bit windy.
My groups are 2-3 inches low at 50 yards, but I need to shoot it more before considering any changes.
Butch has been super helpful, wouldn't it be nice if everyone did business the way he does?

That first trip to the range with a Searcy is soooo much fun!!!!

I found I had spent too much time with scoped rifles and had to learn to see iron sights again. Turned out to be a lot of fun. It amazes me to get two inch or smaller groups at 100 yards with the .470.

Now you have to load enough shells to be almost wasteful when the warmer weather finally makes it ;>Wink

Marty,
For a good deer, pig, black bear over bait load, get some Hawk 350 gr .035jkt bullets and load them over a starting load of 75 grains of IMR 3031 [with filler, foam or dacron] and work up untill they regulate and hitm with the sights.
Velocity should be around 2300 fps.
I have shot one of the Searcy BSS 470,s and it handled well.
Also I have found loads with RL 15 [requires filler] seem to kick less and have less pressure than IMR 4831 in my 450 No2

500grs,

I think I sent you a private message?

In any case I was wondering if you have any loads for a full power lead bullet load for my Searcy. (.470)

Also I have been making my own bullets but was wondering if you use any hardners or just tire weights or what?

Thanks,

Greg

Them $2.00 a bullet loads are getting to be a bit pricey on hogs. I figure I've got about $300.00 worth of premium bullets sunk into hog already this year.. bawling

surestrike. I shoot a 500gn gaschecked bullet cast from wheel weights, water dropped, sized to .476" and lubed with Javalina. I use RL-15 Fed 215 and 5gn of dacron on top. Maybe start around 85gns. I don't get any leading at all. All I've shot with it so far is paper and a bundle of phone books.
My mold came from www.mountainmolds.com

Thank you LAR,

I am using a mould from RCBS also at .476 i don't "water drop" however. I am assuming you drop your hot bullets into water to aneal them?

Where do you get your gas checks from and what is Javalina lube?

I am using a moly lube that goes into my sizer lube die.

I'm new at this bullet casting thing please excuse my dumb questions.

Thanks for the info.

Greg

Not only does he make a great gun, the guy has a memory like an elephant. You can call him on the phone and he talks to you like you are his only customer. Butch is a class A guy period.
