Folks,

Possibly a lil bit off topic but I need to ask the experts. Does anyone reload for the 404J using GSC HV 320 grn bullets? If so, what powder etc etc and at what velcity? Or any other non-con bullet of approximately the same weight? Thanks much

I don't know from personal experience although I did look at the GSC HV 320gn bullet earlier on when I got some 120gn 7mm ones for my 7x57.
On an African hunting info site that I can no longer find to acess for some reason I did get a graph of loading info for bullets from 230gn up to 400 and with the

300gn there are some Somchem powders but a www.loaddata.com load of
AA-2520 85gn - 89gn for 2789fps
H-4895 84gn - 89gn for 2729fps
N Harvey reloading manual 1st ED
Rel 15 85gn - 89gn for 2765fps
IMR-489584gn - 87gn for 2750fps
AR 2208 (Varget) 86gn-89gn for 2730fps.

350gn bullets
N Harvey reloading 1 st Ed
Rel 15 86gn - 89gn for 2630fps
Rel 12 85gn - 88gn for 2570fps
IMR 4064 85gn - 88gn for 2600fps
IMR 4896 84gn - 88gn for 2625fps
2208 (varget) 84gn - 87gn for 2610fps

Loaddata.com
H 4895 83gn - 87gn for 2591fps
Win 748 87gn - 91gn for 2568fps

This data was all in a 23.6in barrel

From the GSC web site scroll down to the 404 data and there are plenty of options with the 320gn GSC bullet and remember that the ADI AR 2208 powder is also sold as H Varget with 2700fps being the gold standard for this bullet, in 24in bullet.

Thanks much Von Gruff. You might remember we chatted about this particular rifle about 6 months ago, and I had posted pics as well. She is a WJJ 404J, made circa 1908, 25" barrel - so I reckon those velocities should be easily achievable. I needed the info to have someone is SA make the ammunition for me for a trip being planned for later this year.

Did you want the somchem powder data as well. What powders does you SA loader have easy access to.And do let us know a bit more about your upcoming hunt.

I remember your 404 well.

Mine got a bit of a work out earlier in the week. Not on traditional 404type game animals nor with hot ammo but a workout all the same and more blood to its credit.

Von Gruff,

Somchem powder data would be great. Sabi rifles will be doing the ammo..I reckon they should be able to get most Somchem powders. Thanks a ton.
