HI, I post on leveraction section, but I also would like to hear from this section also. I have a browning 1895 in a 3006, I am looking at either a 9.3x62 or a 375 hawk convertion. I was looking at a 411 hawk, but I do not think there is any real improvement over a 405? If anyone has a 375 hawk would like to hear there input. I am leaning toward the 9.3 as I can buy brass with no fire form or anything .On the cz-hat sight it claims that a 260 grain NP will get 2677fps,375 hawk?I have not heared to much on this round,Kev

Their note calls this load "hot". I would really question if you can reach that in an 1895. A 9.3 would be hard to beat.

I had started a 375 Hawk project on a VZ-24 and then changed my mind. It seemed to me that the Hawk was having to push very hard to achieve what other calibers did easily. The 9.3x62 being one of these that does the job quite easily. Go with the 9.3 or a 35 Whelen. Both are very easy to obtain commercial brass in and you dont have to max load them to get good performance.

Kev, I use a .375 Whelen AI that I picked up cheap because nobody wants to deal with a wildcat. Nice little gun. I don't have a chrono so I can't give much more than my gut feeling as far as ballistics. I like the .375 caliber but honestly I think the 06 case really reaches it's max potential and best balance at the .338-06 or .35 whelen. The larger case volume of the 9.3x62 probably makes more sense when you move into the 9.3/.375 range. I've thought of doing a '06 length BLR on a .35 whelen or 9.3x62 There is also the consideration with any of these calibers that you won't find ammo for them if you get seperated from your ammo during travel. If you're carrying a .338 win you don't have that worry. That said I'm not going to be giving up my .375 Whelen any time soon. Loaded with Nosler 260gr partitions it's a nice little thumper for here in Alaska. Eric

I had at one time a interrest in most of the calibers mentioned, and after a lot of thought and study, I settled on the 9.3x62 as the better of them all...If I want a 375 then it will be the Holland and Holland, that big bullet just needs more case IMO.... After haveing used the 9.3x62 on game, I am very impressed with its shear killing ability, at least with a handloads and out of a 26 inch barrel, where it is at least in competition with the 375 H&H, but the old 375 still has the edge.

Kev, go for the 9.3x62 and load your lever 9.3 with woodleigh 320 gr softs for a penetrating smasher !!

I'm cheap and lazy. The making of the cases is one pass through the Redding sizing die and trim cases after once fired. I had a bolt gun made in this caliber for shooting nothing but cast bullets, I've never been disappointed. I found a Browning 95 cheap that will eventually become a 375 Whelen. I have the loading dies, bullet molds and all the data I worked up for the bolt gun, no sense in wasting the money to get another caliber. I also have a 95 in 405, this one fine caliber. Jim

Interesting question. Can a 405 push a 300 grain bullet @ 2500 fps (bolt gun)? I picked the 375 Hawk (Scovill) and would do it again. Using non-belted win '06 brass, 59 grains of powder to push a 250 gameking bullet to 2700 fps is cheap and easy. I would guess a somewhat lighter weight package than a magnum action, belted 375 H&H. If you don't reload, the 9.3 x 62 would be my second choice. You still can't go wrong with the 35 Whelen. Snapper

I think the advice given by Ray is right on. I have used the 9.5x62 (aka Hawk, aka Scovill) quite abit and mine actually matches factory .375 H&H ballistics (over a chrono) but I'm not sure I would trust it in hotter climates. The only advantage I see in it over the 9.3 is the avaliability of .375 bullets and now with great 9.3 bullets I think my next project will be building a 9.3

5 years ago, I had z-hat build a 375 Hawk for me on a Win '95 and have really enjoyed shooting it . I have used '06 brass and also Norma 9.3x62 brass to put loads together. I very carefully measured the Norma brass and compared it to the Winchesters I was using, and they were essentially identical where it mattered. If I had to do it again, I would go with the 9.3x62. Loading data is available, and there is an adequate bullet selection for anything you might want to hunt. Although I almost never buy or use factory ammo for anything, it would be nice to have that available if I had to go that route for some reason. Steve
