I'll be taking delivery of my 416 Taylor in the next few weeks. For those of you who load for this round...are you crimping the bullets in the case? Thanks.

CRIMP!!!!
no, wait, did i make that clear?

CRIMP!!!

in field conditions, recoil can, and will drive the bullets deeper into the case, so your 3rd or 4th shoot COULD have the bullets .01" or more deeper. Can you say PRESSURE SPIKE!!!!!!!!!!

the taylor already runs at high pressure...

I never did crimp my Taylors 375 and 416...but if you shoot a number of shots with any big bore leaving rounds in the magazine then by all means crimp....I see no reason to leave rounds in the magazine under todays hunting conditions, I have only done that while culling large animals and I used crimped ammo to do that, otherwise you probably don't need to....but if like Jeffeoso it makes you feel better then by all means do so and you will be on the safe side.

Nope....I don't crimp mine.

And Jeffe is still alive after shooting mine a few weeks ago with uncrimped 400 Hornadys over a MAX charge of RL-15!!! [Razz]

FWIW- I crimp everything and solidly! You get better uniformity in velocities and the bullet won't set back under recoil! I even crimp my competition .50BMG Bore Riders with a collet! Looks like hell but SD's are 10 fps!-Rob

I have never crimped my .416 Taylor rounds. I had custom dies built with a long tapered expander to size up .338s, and have tested the neck tension a number of times by measuring length of last round in the magazine (its 3 + 1 BTW). Bullets include Hornady (cannelure in wrong place anyway!), Taipan, and Woodleigh.

I've never crimped my loads for the Taylor. With a max load of reloader 15 in my rifle it's a compressed load to start with. I shoot the 400 grain Hornady's also and the canalure doesn't work for my rifle. The neck tension seems to be good with the Taylor as well.
Take care,
Dave

Sort of sounding like a broken record here...

But I don't crimp mine either.

Me neither -- although I have been thinking about ordering a Lee Factory Crimp die for my Taylor.
