What is your opinion on .366 DGW ?
What is your opinion on .366 DGW ?
I never handled or shooted rifle in this caliber, only what I know it is .416 Rigby necked down to .366 (9.3mm), relatively low pressure cartridge. It looks it could be great big game cartridge at medium ranges.
Anybody here shoot it or have any expirience with it ?

DavidCThe guy who developed this cartridge used to post here......awhile back.
He is from Maine and last I heard was building rifles for the .366 DGW on Enfield actions.
I think "DGW" is either his initials or a Pro Hunters. Also, there was an article run in SCIs mag on the .366 DGW.....maybe a year or more back..?

DavidCNow that I think about it.......I believe his handle was Judson.
Try a search under that name and see what comes up.

fredj338I read a couple of articles on the round, sounds interesting. My only concerne is that .366 bullets weren't designed w/ the vel. you can drive them from the big Rigby case, but it seems to work well for the inventor.

500grainsIt's too overbore for me.

Dave JamesFrom what I remeber him posting and reading else where , i don't see any difference between it and the 9.3x70, which is the 404 necked down, and I understand that the 9.3x70 can be had in Europe as a factory round

Paolo9,5x73Jiri, I would look at 9,3x66 Sako with 286gr Barnes Solids. I am quite sure it will punch through a scull of just about anything!

Bwana-beFor an ultra-high velocity medium bore in a somewhat obscure caliber, I'd say it's about perfect. If you want to push .366" bullets as fast as you can, one of these in a 30" bbl will get you close.
Why someone would want that is another question, but if that's what you're loking for, I'd even go so far as to say you may ONLY find it in the 366 DGW.
Isn't it off the Wby rather than Rigby case? IIRC, it retains the Wby double-radius shoulder. The bigger North Forks, A-frames might handle it with maybe 300yd head start, but it's true, most bullet makers aren't thinking 3k when they make 9.3mm bullets. It goes really, really fast, but honestly I was surprised how little it gained over the 375 RUM (which could easily be necked down) or 375-404 Jeffery. With a 26" bbl the difference is even less pronounced. Put it in a 3.6" action, and you're really just burning more powder. Sort of like the Lapua vs 338 RUM thing.
If you're thinking low-pressure, then forget what I said about really fast. You can't hunt DG in some countries with less than .375" bore. So it's really just an almost 378 Wby.
As a wildcat, it had to be done, and I'm glad he spent the money on it and not me. But I wouldn't push anyone to go make themselves one out of any interest other than novelty.

Why? Caliber will soon suffer from rigor mortis

9,3X64 Brenneke and does all 9,3X66 can plus a bit more. 9,3X66 had no read advantages over 9,3X62, and sourcing brass and ammo for X66 will be tough
9,3X70 offers plenty of recoil, ammo and rifles are available.

jeffeossofor practical shooting, it's too big to be hyper velocity,,, and too overbore.. and requires an extremely limited set of actions to handle it. and not the cheapest brass in the world to start with.
just want a minimum DGR ? skip the 366 all together,, and start with the 375 whelen (zero hassle to build) 376 steyr (and be way cool) 375 taylor....
or just buy a 375 HH, run an ackley improved reamer in it, and if you like, shoot like bullets fast!

BFaucettI read an article about the .366 DGW in the SCI magazine. My impression was that the guy went a long way around to just basically reinvent the .378 Weatherby Mag.

Mike378If that calibre is a 416 Rigby Improved necked down so it in effects becomes a 366 Wby perhaps the reasoning is to achieve
1) Like the 378, the most powerful of the high velocity rifles and
2) I think there are several complex type European projectiles available in 9.3 but not 375 while at the same time the 9.3 offers the various premium type bullets.

HunterJimIn my opinion good wildcats deliver something not available in factory cartridges. This cartridge appears to duplicate existing factory cartridges, that makes it over the threshhold of pain.
