Talk to your smith first about the potential problems associated with this, I was contemplating having my 458 win rechambered by the kind folks at briley, but their smith advised me against it. The gun I have currently shoots .75" 5 shot groups at a hundred yds, he said after the reaming the accuracy would be noticeably poor around 1.5-2", he recommended new barrel or gun. imho you should shoot it as-is, for accuracy and recoil tolerance before you get on the lott band wagon.

Bwanajcj, I think your smith is wanting to sell you a barrel and a bill of goods, if it shoots a 1/2 now, it will probably shoot that good after rechamber, after all the barrel is a good barrel...I have rechambered a lot of rifles and it never hurt the accuracy in any of them... Besides that who needs a 458 Lott that shoots 1/2 inch groups, thats overkill for shooting buff at 50 to 75 yards..and the Lott is a 200 yard gun at best.

You may talk with your smith about the benefits of making up some rounds with your own dies- sans primers or powder. Your smith can use these as a simple go gauge as he is cutting that chamber. Mine was done on an Enfield which had already been set up as a 458 WM. The new mag box cost me another $125 and the bottom metal came from an old Blackburn outfit I had. It is a very stout rifle and load so be sure you bed and check your crossbolts. I also had a reinforcing rod put into the wrist as I like a little narrower wrist than I should have used.

RIP, Thanks for the heads up on 2.850 vs 2.800. I had seen an article talking about the Watts being the 50/1000's longer than the Lott and I remember thinking "well, going a little bit more on the Lott shouldn't hurt then it would be interchangable... I hadn't thought about it since and wouldn't have if not for your mention. The devil truly is in the details and thanks for the specifics. Appreciate the approximation of 600/1000 throat (not to be confused with freebore). EKM

EKM, Oh yeah, Will reminded me to mention the hogback Lux stock that I so dearly love. I use it on CZ .458 WinMags that were converted to .458 Lott and also .45 Lapua. All I ask of the .458 Lott is 2250 fps with a 500 grain bullet, but of course it will do more with higher pressures. The .45 Lapua will easily do 2400 to 2500 fps with a 500 grain bullet, and it is a nice shooter from the bench or offhand. The way I hold on to it, I notice no problems with muzzle rise, and recoil is very tolerable. The Hogback is very much like a Weatherby Mark V stock in the way it handles recoil, though not as pronounced a Monte Carlo effect from the hogback, so it is better with iron sights, and works well for scopes, and is as good as it gets in a stock to be used for scope and express sights interchangeably. Carry your hogback proudly, as I do. Some have very nice wood. The CZ American stock is O.K. and has more wood around the magazine box, which is a good place to have more wood.
