If your goal is to write an article from an angle that hasn't been worked to death, Paul H and DaggaRon hit on it. Instead of writing about how much power the Lott has, write about its flexibility and what can be done with it. Something like "Loading Down the Lott: A One Gun Safari With John's Rifle". Basically write a .375 H&H piece about plains and dangerous in Africa with the Lott.

Can anyone comment on their knowlege and/or experiences with the .45-70 in the Ruger No1? Is this rifle just plain fun, useful and fun, not worth it or what?

I built my Lott hoping to acheive 458 mag velocity without having to load a compressed load. And since I was starting from scratch the Lott chambering seem to offer a little more flexability, from a reloading stand point. Shayne

I used the Lott for sometime and I liked it pretty well other than my age interfered with my using it, my bursitis acted up from shooting it, old age does that when you have been shooting big bores for 40 years. Now I shoot the 40 calibers and they don't bother me at all, yet...
I liked the Lott and I could "see" the effect it had on Buffalo and heart shot elephant, pretty amazing to see tembo literally cave in from a heart shot and almost go completely down....Buffalo normally shudder like a wet cat and make few tracks, I say normally because on ocassion a 20 MM will only tick'em off...
The 458 Lott in a converted CZ allows you to load it on Sunday and shoot until the following saturday, I LIKE that in a DGR...reloading during a charge is a bit unnerving to say the least, and thats an important aspect of a DGR that is seldom looked at. Also it can be made in a 10 lb. rifle, and thats something else some ignore, because the obviously have not packed a 13 lb. 500 or 505 for 15 miles in a day..When you see Tembo you can't hold the gun off hand at that point, your too bloody tired, unless your a young rooster, and your brains havn't dropped, just your balls.
The Lott can be built on about any action one likes and it is easy to make it feed..With a 26" barrel and IMR-4320 I won't even mention how fast I have driven a 500 gr. bullet, max but safe, but short case life...I allways settle for 2350 in a 26" Lott...a perfect combination of bullet weight and velocity...Much better in killing power, regardless of paper balistics, than any of the double rifle calibers IMO...That little bit of extra velocity with those huge bullets MAKES a big difference, not so much in the smaller calibers, but in the big bore it does. To sum up the Lott, it is what the 458 Win. should have been in the first place..The smartest thing any Arms factory today could do would be drop the 458 win. and produce the Lott as standard fare....
