I recently bought several boxes of .458 Barnes bullets. Included in the purchase are some 400 grain Barnes original semi spitzers. Anybody here have experience with these bullets. I'm wondering about expansion as velocity drops.

originals are cup and core not mono's. They preform like the Remington 405 softpoint, in other words.... they will expand down to about 1000fps. It's when you run them over 2000fps that you get problems!

I have gone through dozens of boxes of old Barnes bullets over the decades. They were made in two jacket thickness: .031 and .049. Expansion and whatever velocity will be determined on which thickness you are shooting.

Do I have to section one, or is there an easier way to determine which version of the bullet that I have? Barnes being Barnes, I'm assuming that the jacket material is copper, not some cheap alloy.

From the Barnes website:
"Flat-nosed Originals will begin expanding at approximately 1600 fps; other Barnes Originals expand at 1900 fps."

If you have the 400 semi spitzer, it's probably the heavier jacket ( pure copper ).
These were made for single shots and the big .458's

My 400 grain slugs are the semi-spitzer-probably too tough for a 45-70 at 2k. I'll keep the 300 flat point and semi spitzers and send the 400s down the road.
