RIP,

How is your CZ Kevlar stock holding up on the .416 Rigby? Still happy with the stock? Thanks.

It is the best stock possible for the CZ 550 Magnum.
Should work fine on the 600 OK and any lesser caliber.
I don't think it is available in lefthand yet, but it is the best choice for any northpaw.

The AHR is by MPI, much inferior to the Bell & Carlson Kevlar stock with full aluminum bedding block.
B&C supplies it only to CZ. You need to call CZ and see if they have any on hand, if you want one for about $450.
They are going like hotcakes.

Has anyone compared the B&C stock to the McMillan both for the CZ550 ...??

I used a Mc Millan Kevlar stock modified from the BRNO 602 blank on my AHR supplied CZ 550.

I have fired over 500 full power 450 Dakota through it. (Close to 600 now).

Robbie Barkmann (ROBAR) in Phoenix did the bedding, knurled grip areas, and paint.

Even though the AHR applied recoil lug broke off at some time (it was only silver soldered in place by their very first gunsmith), the stock still held up to the abuse.

Im sure the McMillan will cost more but it has done well for me.

My only complaint is that it sounds a bit "tin-ey" when a tree limb whacks it compared to a wood stock.

Sure keeps point of impact though. And easy on recoil.

Have both McMillan and B&C-CZ-Kevlar.
I would use either.
McMillan is good.
The B&C is better.
MPI? No thanks, I am stuck with one of those. One is enough.

Do any have the OVAL shaped cheek piece?

I hate those 2/3 oval things that have a 'tail'

that goes forward to the grip region, just not

'right' to my eye, even on a beautiful piece of

wood.

Jack,
If your sensibitities are that "aesthetic" then forget about any synthetic.
I think the CZ Kevlar is BEAUTIFUL.
I like the rounded profile of the oval cheek piece that fades forward, disappearing before it reaches the grip.
The comb is straight with perfected, minimal drop.
Maybe better with a scope, but I can still use the irons.
It has a nice little palmswell like a Sako stock, and is slim and trim all over.
Full aluminum bedding block and about a half pound lighter overall than the "Phat American" walnut or laminate stock.
That is also because you get rid of the "F-Chunk of steel" in the forearm recoil lug contraption of the wood stock when you install the Kevlar.

Very pleasant.
Three rifles with Kevlar stock so far:
300 Lapua (180 grainers at +3000 fps)
.416 Rigby (380-grainers at +2500 fps)
404 Jeffery (380-grainers at +2500 fps)
All like a maiden's carress.

I am going for number 4 on a 500 Mbogo where 570-grainers can do +2500 fps.

The CZ Kevlar has minimal drop and a big-enough Pachmayr Decelerator, and the stock is not an ultralight,
it is about the same weight as a walnut stock of equally slim dimensions.
What is not to be good with recoil there?
It's a beauty.

Just called CZ-USA in KC, 800-955-4486, then select 2 from the menu (replacement parts and accessories department) ...
was told they were still out of the CZ 550 Magnum Kevlar stock, expecting the new shipment about mid January 2010.
Justin was the man last time.
Adam was filling in for him today.

Still no lefthand CZ Kevlars, glad I am a northpaw.

On Monday I talked to Justin. I told him I wanted the stock for the 550 Magnum. Then I even confirmed with him that the stock was the magnum stock "for calibers like the .416 Rigby and .458 Win Mag and Lott" and he said yes. I guess I will see for sure when the stock shows up. It shipped on Monday, so it should be here by early next week.

I was there just this morning getting some junk (ie, parts) from Adam. He wouldn't lie to ya.

For months, maybe years, I argued with Rippo about straight stocks kicking less than hogbacks. He wouldn't listen to it. How times have changed.

He is so easy. Smiler

Justin or Adam?
Will try again later.

Will,
I reckon my shoulder still does not know physics, or I am recoil immune and you are a recoil whimp. Wink
I find all the CZ stocks to make no difference in my appreciation of recoil.

Ordered on Monday, mine arrived today.

On the invoice it is listed as CZ550 American Safari Kevlar, Item No. 19919. I took my .458 Lott and it drops right in. Nice looking stock although it would be nice to put a modest amount of checkering on it.

It just sounds like I am whining, really I was just trying to trap someone else into whining about me ostensibly whining. Now I am whining about the fact that a whiner that thought I was whining is whining about me whining when really I was not whining at all.

Pray that you are right handed in your next life, or shoot right handed now.

Too close to the holiday mess? Adam must have just been blowing me off at noon of day before Christnmas Eve, if Mike did not get the last one in stock.
Justin was out to lunch actually and Adam was out to lunch figuratively?
Mike slid in under the wire for shipping?

Later.

I guess so shooting those pipsqueak cartridges. Shooting the .458 Lott is like loving a fat woman, you need a little something to hold on to if you do not want them slipping around on you. Wink

My arms are 2 inches longer than my height.
I am no ape, no chromosomal abnormalities, just a broad-of-shoulder, 6-foot-square bear (5-11 plus 6-1) who likes some extra LOP.
The 500 Mbogo (loaded hot) makes the 458 Lott and 500 Jeffery into pipsqueaks.

Hi RIP
thanks for posting the photos of the stock. I'm sure it comes in black as well? I'm interested in a synthetic stock for my 470 Mbogo so I don't screw up my wood stock I made. This seems like a really nice alternative to be able to drop the gun in and go out and play :-)

Not sure if they make other colors. Mine looks exactly like RIP's. The flash does make it look gray, it is more black with the spider web accent.

Dave,
Mike is right, the stock looks almost black in most lighting.
The flash made it lighter and bluish.
No other colors offered yet, that I know of.
Solves the problem of what color to order.
I have not dug into the forearm on any of them yet, nor x-rayed,
but I think the aluminum bedding block extends out to the edge of the barrel recoil lug recess,
and it does surround the magazine well.
A very stiff and sturdy stock.
Should hold up very well to 470 Mbogo punishment. thumb

Found this on search.

What does the 416 Rigby weigh with the kevlar stock.

My local gun store has a real deal on a 416 Rigby 550 magnum and i am really tempted. I am awaiting its arrival in the shop so that I can see it and handle it.

I do not own a Big bore DG rifle (my Simson M98 in 9.3X62 is medium bore). I have no real experience with shooting Big bores.

Would it be a good chice for a first big bore rifle? My use for the rifle would be local practice and a first African Safari for buffalo & PG. I know that I could do Africa with my Simson 9.3 but would prefer a big bore.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Off the top of my head, on the road:
The CZ Kevlar stock weighs about 2.5 pounds, about the same as the average walnut Euro-hogback "Lux" stock,
and about 1/2 to 3/4 pounds less than the Fat-American stock of walnut or laminate.
So the factory .416 Rigby barreled action dropped into a CZ Kevlar stock will weigh about 9.25 pounds.
And maybe the flex of the buttstock makes recoil less.
You gotta decide the rest for yourself.
Since you have the 9.3, a .416 would be a nice second rifle, but so would be a .375.
Take all three. tu2

I am still awaiting the Rigby. I am also having a look at a 404 Jeffery built on a 1950 FN Mauser action. that rifle should arrive on wednesday. I hope I can compare them and make the right decision.

Cost wise the two should end up even - the 404J has all the reloading stuff and developed loads plus some lead cast bullets.

The rifle that fits me best will be the one I pick! I hope I can shoot it as well as the Simson 9.3X62.

Naki, your predetermination to buy the rifle that fits you better is certainly the right way to go with any big bore.
Stock fit goes a long way in taming some of these bad-boys.

I shoot three different big bores, all over .45 cal and must say I prefer any and all of them to any .416 Rigby I've ever fired.
Just something about the way the Rigby comes back that doesn't agree with me, at least not for regular use.

If you are allowed the oportunity I would reccomend firing a few rounds out of each before making the decision, at least if you are at all recoil sensitive.

I have shot a few big bores but only briefly - mostly doubles - from 9.3X74 & 45-70 to 600 NE. I loved the 450-400NE. I shot a 470 with a short stock that beat up my cheek bone but the 600 NE just pushed me back.

Not great experience but I have an idea what to expect.

I have done it! dancing

I went to the gunshop today & looked at 2 great rifles.

The 404 Jeffery was custom project rifle on a 1950 FN action with a gorgeous piece of NZ English walnut. It had a really nice ghost ring peep sight and a nice gold / brass bead foresight (NECG?). The action was silky smooth and it handled and pointed like it was made for me. Very steady on the point - off hand. Just a bit heavy for me - by 7 oz - & the wood foree-end is a bit stouter & the stock needs checkering. Also needs to be drilled & tapped if I wanted to mount a scope. It comes with all reloading bits and developed loads. Also has lead cast bullets. Awesome rilfe.

The second rifle was a 416 Rigby (I know it is not on the original poll!) CZ 550 mag Kevlar. Again fits me perfectly with same LOP & a thicker recopil pad. Lighter & feels better for a bush carry at 9 lb 1 oz. Fits me well too. The things I am not happy with are the foresight bead which needs to be changed & the bolt is sticky and needs to be lapped. The pistol grip in not a perfect fit but works!

After a lot of thought and vacilating I have decided to go for the 416 Rigby CZ (thanks RIP!) as it is a lighter rifle & easier to carry in the field. I will have to buy all the other bits & develop loads - but that is part of the adventure!

Cost wise the two packages will end up about the same.

My heart still skips at the thought of that great walnut stock and rust blue on the Mauser!

May be I'l get lucky with some money & buy that too! Wink
