Here's the deal folks, my 1917 in 458win, which is still only partially finished (and costing much more than originally though) it has been recommended to me by a very good gunsmith that I go up to the Lott. He also said that I could even shoot the 458win's in the Lott. So here are my questions:

1. Is it like the .38special/357mag thing, where if I shoot a lot of the shorter round I will burn a ring in the chamber or something and mess it up for shooting the lott? Will it damage the gun at all to shoot the Winchester's in it?

2. My tube is only 22", will I even get good performance with the Lott?

3. Am I going to pay a fortune for the Lott dies and some ammo?

4. If it is a bad idea to shoot the win. ammo in the lott, what do I do with the 3 boxes of ammo, 100 rounds of brass etc.? :-) (I thought of a 416 taylor, but is there a point if I already had a Lott?)

THanks guys.

DagoRed: You can get another 458 WM rifle or I can take the brass and your rounds off your hands for whatever you have tied up into it. I have had 458's and am down to an older Ruger 77 that shoots real nice and soft. [Cool] [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

Red,

Shooting the Wins from the Lott are for only when your ammo is lost or for life and death...The amount of powder burning is not like the 3 to 6 grains of pistol powder and the Lott holds 82 grs..Hornady dies $35 approx...You can drop to a 450gr or go to a faster burning powder to push the 500gr. Lott casings can be bought buffalo arms from Idaho good prices and service. Loaded the Lotts are Approx. from Hornady $60..

Dago,

I have just precived my cz .458 winnie and I have purchased Lott dies and brass from Grafs (waiting for it to arrive) once you have the gear it is only a few more grains of powder in expense to shoot lott and you can get better perfromance. Lott dies are $25 US a set (Hornady).

My rifle will not even be fired as a .458 win mag Lott for me [Smile]

I just bought some 458 Lot brass from Midway. $23.12 for 50:

I don't understand why retreever said to only use the 458 Mag in an emergency. Maybe he can elaborate?

The other approach is to make the basic 458 Win more powerful. First, go to AA2230 or 2460 to get close to 2200 fps with 500 grain bullets. Second, if you need more power, use the Speer 500 gr AGS which is short for its weight and gives extra case capacity. These will do 2250 fps with AA2230.

If you still need more power, order your bullets from Hawk with the cannelures cut closer to the base and seat them out to get more case capacity. Andy charges only $2 a box for this and will cut them exactly where you want them. This assumes your magazine and throat are the right dimensions. Even a .20 inch increase in COL will add 8 grs of capacity to the 458, and you will have a 458 Lott, especially with AA2230.

All of this will work fine in a 22 inch bbl.
