Can anyone tell us about their personal experience with the 378 Weatherby on Cape Buffalo Asian Buffalo Elephant etc ,since this calibre seems to be one of the most maligned calibre and the 375 H and H the most overated ever

Gentlemen The big Weatherby calibers got a bad rap in Africa because of such poor bullet development back in the early days. However, with todays high tech that it no longer the case. I would not be affraid to take any animal on earth with my .378 Weatherby Magnum as long as I had good bullets in hand. I would recommend a bullet than can handle such high velocity like the North Fork( if you are lucky enough to find them) Swift-A-Frame, Barnes X or TSX and Nosler Partition and I'm sure I'm missing another good bullet. Roy Weatherby took the .378 to Africa I believe back in 1958 to test the big .375 and killed many animals such as Cape Buffalo and Elephant with one shot. Steve

I have not used mine on buffalo but have used it to take one hippo with a Barnes solid in the brain. I have mostly used it hunting Nilgai in South Texas. A very tough animal that requires alot of killing. I shot 10 of them with the .378 WM. A couple of them were shot with Barnes X and the rest with the 300 Gr. Swift A-Frames. It's an accurate, flat shooting, hard hitting caliber that gets a lot of bad press, mostly from people that have never used one or seen one used in the field. The key, as stated above, is using premium bullets. It's one of my favorite calibers and I would not hesitate using it for anything. WLA
