So after putting 30 rounds through my Ruger #1, I have it currently with Aaron Little to get a red decelerator pad and a trop safety. We are currently kicking around the idea of fitting a NECG single express leaf for the rear, and something more prominent for the front. Anyone ever modified the sights for this rifle in this caliber? The 10/22 sights aren't cutting it. And since the cards don't read a double rifle I am trying to keep express fever going in Kentucky.

N.E.C.G. has flourescent beads in red in several heights to fit No 1 front ramps. They have several sizes I have the 3/32" red on mine and really like it. I put them on all my big bores. They aren't particularly inexpensive though. I also like the Trop safety I put on it but they require some wiggling to install and my fingers are no longer double jointed the older I get. Got it in though and it surely works nicely.

I had an express rear sight made for mine.

Looking at a new rib made in Australia, to allow for good QD rings.

I think a peep and high vis front sight would be very good.

Put a scope on it I heard they help with all kinds of sighting problems.

I am interested in this post also. I just recieved a Ruger #1 in 450/400 as well. I am going to install a limbsaver recoil pad that I have ordered. I have a Leupold VX 3 1.5x 5x 20 ready to install.I agree the open sights need improvement. I installed the Trop Safety on my 375 H&H a while back, its a big improvement. Will install one on this rifle when I fit the limbsaver. Will check out NECG for the open sights.

Please post pics of your finished rear sight. I have not seen the Ruger rib opened up to accept this NECG sight insert. It should work well. Is your smith using a set screw to keep the insert in place or just a tapered dovetail groove?

I would not consider removing that quarter rib. I would just install a shallow V and file it in at 75 yards. The front sight is a barrel band and most folks like a 3/32 Ivory, but same in a red glowing ornament would be suitable, but out of 450-400 character, but them I am more or less a nostalgic.

I liked the patridge front sight because while not a ivory bead still looks looks good. I may just go with a bigger white bead. I'll be happy to post pictures when I get the rifle back. Maybe Aaron will snap a few shots when he gets the parts in and on.

Those big white (usually flip up) beads are pretth worthless IMO, they just cover up too much buffalo head and that can be disconcerting if he is looking for ya..I would stick with the time proven 3/32 or the NECG gold faced post with peep sights or with a properly filed in shallow V that gives the same sight picture as you would get on a pistol, the top of the post flush with the top of the V, its fast and accurate.

That's the plan. The NECG rear is back ordered 4-6 weeks, so Aaron is investigating another source.

Aaron sould be able make a one standing shallow V to fit the existing dovetail in the existing quarter rib without much trouble..Combine that with a gold faced partridge, and file it in to take a pistol type sight picture with the post level with the top of the V, incredibly fast like a ghost peep, and accurate as a target peep.

I have Skinner sights on my Ruger #1 45-70 and they work really well for me. With only minor tweaking, they were accurate to just over 100 yards. and probably further with some practice.

I have a ruger no 1 .458 with the skinner peep (large aperature) and the NECG partridge front sight; looks to be a very nice combination.

I haven't shot it yet. I expect it will shoot well as it shot very well with an XS Peep; which I replaced with the Skinner, didn't care for the talk front sight the XS required.

Skinner's customer service is very good.

Call Ruger and order the single leaf fixed rear sight and the white front bead as used on the Boddington .450/.400 3 1/4" guns.

I think they fit the standard dovetail on the rib and the front bead definitely fits.

If your looking for practicality it would be hard to beat the NECG skeletonized rear and flourescent red front bead.
