Looking to buy a custom 458 Lott. Does anyome have data on the pressure loads for the 458 Lott (probably not describing the issue correctly). For example, Montanarifleman.com has barrel sizes and technical data. Their #5 barrel size has a maximum caliber of .416. The rifle I am looking at is a Montana action/barrel in a #4 barrel.

Wondering if it is safe/adequate, as it is reamed/chambered for the 458 Lott, but the max caliber listed on Montana's site for this barrel is a .375. Even if the barrel is a #5 barrel, is this even adequate for the 458 Lott?

The rifle is unfired- I don't want to be a guinea pig.

Any input from anyone? Thanks!

Generally the muzzle of a high powered rifle should have a minimum 0.125" wall thickness, though many makers spec a minimum of 0.150". Thus with a .458" bore, the muzzle dia minimum should be 0.71-0.76" dia. So long as the muzzle is at least 0.75" in dia, I wouldn't worry a bit about the strength of the barrel.

The real issue is the shootability of the gun. A 458 Lott with a 0.75" dia at the muzzle barrel will be very light, and hence rather unpleasant to shoot.

As I recall, my first 458 lott, which was very light, as 0.80" at the muzzle, and my current lott which is a bit on the heavy side is 0.85" at the muzzle.

What does the rifle weigh? That will have a lot to do with it's "shoot-ablity". Also contour #s and the actual size will differ with each barrel maker. So saying it is a #5 and not stating the maker realy does not tell anything about the barrel.

If it is around 10 lbs, it should be managable.
