today my mate & I fired our .585's for the first time. They were pussy cats but we were only fireing the 650 gr BP woodleigh projectiles infront of 150 grains of AR2209 which is about 5 grains slower than IMR4350. I think they would have been doing between 2200 & 2400 fps.
First shot I was shitting myself as I did not know what to expect , but it behaves much nicer than my .416 Rigby. I have not tried to fire it without the muzzle break, we fired 10 shots each, including test shots (working up to the 150 grains) and did a initial rough sight in. Although recoil was fine I can tell it has got horsepower, and I can't wait to shoot some game with it next week
we took video of the session and we will try and get it onto cd so I can email it to those who are interested (that may take a while, it is not my camera it's my mates and his missus). I am going to get pictures sorted out at some point soon, and I will try and post them.

PC- Congrats on another 585 NYATI being born! I told you it wasn't that bad! You built it right and payed the freight and now you have a reliable and shootable NYATI unlike the 10-20 others I've seen! Now go to 750 gr Woodleighs and 135 grs of RL15. I would not take off the brake if I were you! Please take some videos and share them with us!-Rob

Hi PC, Congratulations on your 585 project. I think you will find a huge difference without the muzzle brake but if you like it use it. I always figured if you want to shoot the power you should feel the power. Try a shot without it at the lower velocity levels and see what you think. I would sure like to see the pictures when you get a chance to post them. 470 Mbogo
I will attempt to get the video going when I can get hold of my mates camera.
500 grains, I fired two shot without adjusting the scope and those two shots were touching each other. So I feel the potential for quite an accurate rifle is there, this suprised me somewhat. I suppose it weighs as much as some bench rifles would.
I do realise I need to step up to the plate remove the sissy slots and let off a few 750 grainers, it will happen in due time however I will have to have half a dozen stubbies first , as following this my athelitic ability increases, as does my strength & testicular fortitude not to forget it will also dull the pain.

I was wearing muffs, but it was not to bad. Worse when your beside the perosn shooting rather than being the actual shooter. Also all the holes in my break are angled 20 degrees forward which is supposed to help in regards to blast according to the smith.

Well,,you say this thing has horsepower. You've only tried the gun with 650 gr.and 2300-2400 fps,and muzzlebrake ! Well i thought you could turn off your muzzlebrake to try this load(n-202,146 gr.2530 fps,750 gr.bullet) out,but it does't really matter anyway,,cause recoil will be harsh, bet with this load, your gun will end up definitly on the wrong side of those 100 ft/lbs recoil of your .585, even with the brake on !! By the way, could you find out the recoil energy with my load. I bet you could reach 2560+ fps with 750 gr.cause you barrel measures 26 or 27 inches ,right ?!That woould hurt you !
PC, a bastardised quote from Appocolypse Now.... "You must make a friend of recoil, because if it's not your friend, then surely it is it your enemy....."
I think you and recoil and going to be seeing a lot of each other
we are a little restricted so far as powders go here in Australia and I use ADI powders pretty much exclusivel I use AR2209 which Mike 375 said is about 5 grains slower than IMR4350.
My barrel is 25" long with 3" of break. 500 gr reckons that the break is conjusive to burnin ga little extra powder but not as much as the equivalent length in barrel.
When the Horneber brass arriveds I will start mucking about with the 750's then

CZ 550 in all honesty with the 650's a 13 pound rifle, muzzle break & three recoil reducers it is fine. My mate has fired his with 750's and while he said it kicked it was not that much worse than with the 650's. The on game performance is worth the recoil

I have concluded that I must be a lot wimpier than PC, because my 13.25 pound 585 nyati with brake and mercury leaves me dazed and with a headache after 15 rounds.

500 your shooting 750's though !! and after one session of 17 shots I returned to camp and had two asprin & three panadol. But if I do not hold the .416 correctly it can have the same effect, incidently my shooting mate also swallowed some panadol & asprin, all washed down with a couple of VB stubbies & a tea bone steak
I suppose the point I am trying to make is that recoil is not so bad you do not want to fire it.
