I'd like to develope a load using lighter weight bullets in the 220-230gr range for my 375. I'm mainly looking for comments on the performance of bullets in this weight class. That and any loads that work good for you would be mucho appreciated.

I've been very happy using RL-15 in all of my 270gr and 300gr loads, does it work as well with the lighter projectiles?

Thanks....

Mule shoe I have shot the 235 gr speers but want to move up to the Hornady 300 gr RN, were heading in opposite directions [Big Grin]

They began to open up on roo's so they should expand on the majority of your big deer like creatures.

RL 15 in my manual lists as being the best performer but alas it's hard to get hear and very expensive.

muleshoe In the 375 H&H I have loaded the Hornady 220gr over 60gr and 64gr. of 3031. This bullet worked perfect on a whitetail doe shot facing me at @ 175 yards. I recovered the bullet in the ham expanded just like they look in the bullet ads. I shot a nice buck at @ 100 yards with the Speer 235gr.sp over 64gr. of 3031. Bullet hit behind the shoulder [deer was walking, quartering away] and exited. The Buck went down in his tracks.
I have also loaded the Sierra 250 spz. over 64 gr. of 3031. I have not shot any game with the 250 Sierra. These loads are "reduced" from full power and are good ones for deer, pigs, etc.
Just today I shot some of the 220 Hornady load in a buddys 375 CZ. He is going on a doe cull hunt this weekend. He is planning on using the 220 Hornady reload, and the Federal Premium 250 Trophy Bonded Bearclaw. Hopefully he will kill a couple of deer with each bullet.
Any number of powders will work, I just have 3031 on hand.
Be VERY careful about "reducing" loads under the listed starting load.
Speer also shows a reduced load of 26gr of SR4759 with the 235 bullet at 1500fps, MAX load of SR4759 30gr.[compressed] for 1701fps.

Thanks guys,

As stated, I'm really interested in hearing about real life bullet performances from the selection of the lighter end of the .375 spectrum. Are there any that you'd just plain avoid?

PC, I've got a full box of Hornady 300gr RNs that I'll likey never use. If'n ya weren't halfway 'round the world I'd offer up a swap for a box of your 235s, but I gotta think postage would be a bit stiff.

N E, that's exactly what I'm looking for. Do you know roughly what kind of velocities you're getting with that 64gr of 3031 under a 235 weight bullet?

Thanks again....

muleshoe I have not chrono-ed this particular load, but according to Ken Waters PET LOADS in the march 1978 HANDLOADER, he got 2639fps with 64 gr. of IMR 3031 in a 24 inch bbl. He listed 70gr. as max. with a velocity of 2870fps. Speer lists 75gr. [compressed] at 2915 as max.

I got an average of 2585 fps for 3 shots but the group opened up quite a bit compared to my 62 gr. load.

Yeah Mule shoe postage would probably kill us I have 40 left that I will not use, I am set on using 300 gr projectiles in my .375. I have my calibers seperated by bullet weight;

30/06=180
375=300
.416=410

sought of trying to keep about 100 odd grains of weight as being the step up to the next power level if you know what I mean.
