Guys, I have an opportunity to purchase a slightly used left-handed Weatherby in 460 but I don't know much about the rifle or the cartridge.

A previous owner had a very cheap looking Williams rear sight installed and a rather simple in-eligant looking front sight. The barrel is ported with a series of many small holes that I think is factory. The stock is typical Weatherby wood with the high-gloss finish but unremarkable grain/figuring.

They're asking $1795 but I think I can get it for a couple hundred less than that. Opinions, please; and thanks.

John,

Ask yourself a few questions:

  • What am I going to do with it?
  • Is it worth it?
  • If I don't like it, how difficult will it be to unload it?

Setting aside the facts that it is a push-feed with lots of recoil and muzzle blast, that it consumes large quantities of powder at an alarming rate, has dated styling, and is expensive to feed, you'll need to remediate a couple of things, and buy a tough scope and mounts.

If you're not used to shooting rifles with 100ft.-lbs. of recoil, you'll have to acclimate yourself to it slowly.

If you intend to hunt DG with it, you'll have to make sure everything is working perfectly (feeding, extraction, sighting systems, etc.). In addition to the expense of feeding a big-bore, and the abuse of the recoil, you'll also have to take the abuse of your fellow AR Members.

I think all told, $1795 is WAY too much; $1000 is as high as I would go, as there is an extremely limited market for this gun (LH or not).

George

P.S. The grain should be straight through the grip; even the reinforcing bolt Weatherbys have in this area will not prevent the stock from splitting if there is an inherent weakness in the wood (that's from 'conventional wisdom', not personal experience).

P.P.S. MOST .460 Weatherby rifles are 'slightly-used'.

Toomany Tools..I purchased a 460 and have never been happier. Lots of people on these boards will give you hell just because it is a weatherby. Enjoy it.. I sure do! I looked at a model that you described. I believe it was made in Japan. I ended up getting the 460 in the DGR model. New it cost around 2,000. You can also take off the muzzle brake and put it away for good.

I have never shot one, but I would guess the recoil at a level with or without a brake to either make you have naked babies, or liken to be abducted by space men for a very short period of time.

Better make sure thats what you want, like Geo said, the ones you find aint got many miles on them.

I own several Weatherby's but only up through the 378. I like them but as far as what you are looking at...the 460.. I believe GeorgeS outlined the points very well. The gun is probably worth around $1,000 to $1,200.

I have shot a 460 before and although I seem to be less sensitive to recoil than most...the 460 will rock your world!

My opinion the 460, probably like my 378, is too much of a good thing in terms of velocity, recoil, cost, etc.

Why do you need the 460? If you plan on hunting with a big rifle...You could by two CZ's for that price...get a 458 Lott, 416, 375, etc and hunt anything in the world. A 500 grain bullet at 2150 fps or better will work for anything...2650 fps..why?

If your interested my 378 is for sale at less than the price of that 460 and it has a few bells and whistles...heck I will give you a set of dies as well!

Now we are getting to the nitty-gritty. The .460 is nothing more than a .450 Rigby or Dakota with a radius shoulder (for looks) and a totally useless belt. If you load it down to Rigby velocities it is perfectly manageable, but, as George has so accurately pointed out, that stupid belt reduces the magazine capacity to 2! In a DGR? I think not!! So whytheHell should one go through all the changes and jump through the hoops to make a Wby shootable when there are so many better options available. Even if you need a LH rifle, and I can certainly appreciate that, the cartridge is the nuts!

I forgot to mention, it has a two-round magazine capacity, if that matters.
