In my Whitworth, Federal Cape Shok factory fodder clocked 2350 fps (consistently) recently which would indicate to me that current factory ammo has not been downloaded to correct some pressure issue. Maybe there was something wrong with the first offerings in the Rem's infancy, but I don't think it is an issue today in the least.

The only sticky extraction I ever got with my 416 Rem was factory ammo 400 grains at 2425-2450 fps (!!!)

I load 400 grain bullets to 2350 fps with IMR4895 and have no problems with pressure.

jjs - I will take some pics of the rifle. I hope I can do it justice.

Here's a pointer to a thread with some pics with the 416 in em, but the Cutrifle Express is not the focus. I'll try to get some better ones. (You can see it in Africa here.)

No matter how one feels about the pressure issue, the fact it comes up,to me backs up
what Jeff,me and I think Jorge said. Go with
the 458 Lott. It will send a 400 gr Barns almost
2600fps and if they go ahead with a 400 TXS then it will do 2600fps. No pressure problems.
A 500gr at 2300 fps. It just seems logical to
me and like others I think it is a great pair
with the 375H&H.

I have had both-prefer the Rigby.
Why?-no belt to stuff-up feeding
-works at much lower pressure
-can be turned into much more
powerful round than the Rem.
if you hand load and still be
working at lower pressures.

Here's a link to an album of photos taken by John Ricks, when he installed the original Cutrifle barrel. The barrel is matte finished now, and all I get is a black hole in the background when I take a picture. (I think John liked the rifle - it's still front and center on his web page!)

If John objects to using his photos, then I will try to take some more. I hope these show what you need to see. No photo can do the barrel justice. The machining is exquisite.

Looks mean very little to me. If you saw the stock up close you'd really cry. It's very nice grain for a factory stock and has cut checkering, but it's full of little dings from the bakkie in two trips to Africa as well has some bigger scars from me falling with it in the rocks.

I actually don't like that recoil pad either - but not enough to change it!

You can load it up and also down some, covers a bigger load range. Not to mention nostalgia.

All things being equal (except for the powder charge), the Rigby will recoil about 5-8% more than the Remington. An extra 1/2 pound of weight in the Rigby rifle negates the difference.

This theoretical estimate seems in line with my own perception of the recoil differential...it does exist but its not much.
