CRF - Winchester, Ruger, CZ, or other ??? Login/Join

All,

Kind of some open ended questions I'm about to ask.

I'm itchy to either build or buy a new gun in 375 on up 458 Lott being the most likely candidate at this time.

Looking for opinions and/or experiences.

What's the consensus here on the best affordable receiver and/or completed rifle that doesn't need much work?

Winchester, Ruger, CZ, or other?

Or should I just build something on a 1917 Enfield?

Your feedback is appreciated.

I'd buy a factory Ruger 375 Safari if I were you...or get a custom rifle on a M-98 Mauser action, but thats costly..

The Whitworth Express is the best buy I think at around $700. they all feed well and shoot good..Change the trigger and safty to a M-70 type safty and a blackburn trigger.

Ray,

Thanx for the info.

It's the basic rifleman's quandry.

I have that RSML 416 Rigby and I'm always looking for other guns/calibers.

I just sold a custom 416 rem Mag done on a Sendaro stock & receiver.

I've found 2 really nice guns done on 1917 Enfields - a 375 H&H and a 458 Win Mag.

I also have a 1917 Receiver at my house looking for a barrel.

I've also been kicking aroung the Win Safari Model 70 in either 375 H&H or 416 Rem Mag or perhaps a 77 RSM in 375 H&H.

Just don't know what way to go here.

Still waiting for the club meeting to talk to my guys about RSA for this year or next.

Mark,
Ruger is producing a 77RSM in .458LOTT this year. I have one on my AccuSport "Wishlist". Our rep is going to call me when they are availible.

I need something to put in the safe next to my 77RSML Rigby.

George,

Thanx for the info.

I didn't know that.

I also saw that the Winchester Custom Shop is offering their Custom afari Grade in 458 Lott. At close to $3K MSRP, that's a little too steep.

I guess that I'm stuck in the build it or buy it scenario.

Building a 458 lott on an Enfield is just about the most expensive route you can go.

500grains,

Why so?

Is it plain out easier to buy a 70 or 77 and ream a 458 Win Mag?

I'm thinking anything I build, whether it be a 7 Ultra, or a 458 Lott, will be ~$800 when it's all set and done with.

My receiver is set. Oval is filled, bolt & follower jewled, drilled, tapped, mounts installed, Timney trigger installed, all metal work is blued, boltface and rails are opened for a 375 H&H "type" cartridge - actually an 8mm Rem Mag cartridge.

SS barrel will be ~$325 fitted, chambered, etc.

Stock is ???????? Perhaps an MPI or may borrow a stock off of one of my A-squares. B&C at a minimum.

Mark
