I am building a 470 Capstick and I would like to know what twist rate people use for bullets in the 275 to 500 grain range. Ross

Ross Traditional twist rate for the Capstick is 1:10. Which is excellent with the right bullets. Why would anybody need such a steep twist for a 500grain bullet in .475cal?. My own .416Rigby has 1.14 twist and shoots 500grain hawkbullets just perfect!. I believe the twist for a .470Nitro is about 1:18 shooting 500grain aswell. DRSS: HQ Scandinavia. Chapters in Sweden & Norway

You need this twist to work with terminal penetration. Faster twist rates are able to stabilize solids better for straight line penetration. If you use a slow twist, and a bullet that has a less than optimum meplat, less than 65% of caliber, then it is difficult to get stability during terminals. See "terminal Performance" thread here in big bores, fully explained and tested, and proven. Your 416 Rigby with it's 1:14 is not optimum for this with 400 gr solids--very good for 350s to 370, the only way you can do better with the 400s is use an optimum bullet, North Fork or Barnes Banded with meplat sizes from 65% to 70% of caliber, and increase velocity. This is for solid penetration--has nothing to do with accuracy or terminals of soft points, the faster twist has no negative or positive effect on those, at DG ranges.
